A have a lot more favorites from the first cast, although most of them are dead. While I might enjoy some of the second game cast, I find a lot of them either too mediocre or underdeveloped which made them felt irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
Other than maybe Leon, Hifumi, and Hagakure, I felt like a lot of the first cast had some type of depth that I enjoyed. And even then Hifumi is still pretty fun at least half of the time with his reactions and constant references.
It felt like a worse trade off having a couple of characters I don't like compared to ones I didn't feel attached to very much because they felt underutilized.

Opinions but I don't think there's any credence to the "developed" argument. Most of the characters in the DR series are shallow archetypes (including Taka), and DR1 does not break this mold any more than DR2. The difference is I like the archetypes in DR2 more.

Well by development, I meant how much they did in the story, how well they interacted with the rest of the cast, how good their free time events were, etc.
I don't care if the character fits an archtype or not. I care more about what they bring to the story, or how fun I found them as a character.
I mentioned this before, but I felt that because of how much spotlight is put on Nagito in the second game cast, and so much focus in put on him that he feels like a sponge that absorbs the rest of the other characters development and so much skews towards his favor. The characters just wait around until Nagito reacts or to wait for his input, this even blatantly happens during the third trial and it was at that point I was getting sick of him, and all this does is develop him some more, and only then does the plot to move forward. It makes everybody else, even Hajime feel wasted and underutilized.
Even with Kyoko and Byakua feeling like sponges during the trials, this isn't true during the rest of the game. Everybody is in the same boat and it was nice to see how everybody reacted differently towards the situations they were put in, not just as a single character, but how they interacted as a group as well.
Basically I think that the first game has a far better character dynamic compared to the second and it's why I prefer it.

So now that Danganronpa is moving away from handhelds like Vita and onto stationary consoles like PS4 and now we got Steam, it only leaves the NX left. It was one of the next hardware Spike said they'd work on after PS4 when it came to stationary consoles so when do you think we'll see the series head to the NX? Especially if it has an NX Handheld. I like Mahiru because she's a normal person and it's easy to see why she'd be corrupted by the Ultimate Despair. She's just this sorta-good photographer that gets wrapped up in things way bigger than herself. Her friend ends up murdering somebody else on her behalf, and then is subsequently murdered for it. She runs into Junko Enoshima and has her brain infected to despair. She's a participant of the second killing game and tries to confront a probable murderer by herself. She's admirable and somewhat foolish but ultimately pretty relatable. Her free time events are enough to get me to understand her outlook for a character that dies two chapters in. She's a fully realized character and that's all you can ask for in a series like Danganronpa

I get the feeling the entirety of DR2's cast was created as characters first and remnants of despair later. For most of them I actually really struggle to see how they'd fall to despair, or at least to the lengths that we're told they do. Instead we're just expected to believe "Junko is the queen of despair lol" and assume she can make anyone despair.

Izuru? If Hajime is Izuru then he instantly realizes Mukuro isn't Junko and Junko re-wipes their memories after he ruins everything. After that there isn't much difference. Sayaka's case is different with no Makoto which probably causes a butterfly effect. I can't think of anything Makoto would handle differently than Hajime in DR2. Maybe Makoto tells Nagito about the case in 2-3 but other than that nothing really hinges on Hajime in his personal capacity. They're of about the same intelligence I'd think.
