It happened even before CV's went away. All you needed was either a couple of cruisers circling around you or the CV to be focused on the other side of the map. Which happened pretty often. CV's helped mask the issue, but it has always been there.
Decrease repair costs for T8 through 10 and make citadels from the front easier, so that angling remains a viable tactic for reducing one's profile and keeping it hard to hit. And nerf fucking Yamato while at it, her shells should be as effective as Montana's.

I do 5-7k salvos against Tirpitzes and Colorados when shooting into their superstructure. I've found plunging AP into superstructures don't do much, but if it has a flatter trajectory (i.e. about < 10km), it eats up superstructures like nothing.

Angle. Use terrain to your advantage to get below the 10 km range. At that range you can murder cruisers with ease, and enemy battleships lose their advantage on your deck armor. Don't go after far off objectives because you'll never make it. Pick the shortest non-suicide route to the shortest objective. T8s can and will murder you, anything at your tier or below is food.
I mean, I don't know how to be more specific or where to focus. Overall it's all about brawling (and more importantly, how to get into brawl range without dying in the process).

yes, especially the IJN's, they have shit armor up to tier 6, but you have to get close enough to get a flat shot trajectory

Most of my ships are tier III or IV now, and the XP needed for progression is gettting pretty steep.. Any recommendations on which tech trees to grind first? I like Jap dds for torp range, and I like fast-firing gun boats. What tree provides fast guns?

Jap DDs start sucking at Tier 6, because 10km range doesn't make up for orgasmic 3x2 launchers and 30 seconds of reload time. Dunno if 5.2 will make it more probable.
Fast firing gunboats are ok right now, US fast firing ends at Omaha, so play US DDs or better, Ruski DDs.

well there's a buff coming for torp stealth AND a nerf to BB turning speed, so it should get pretty fun

well, there are the "gunboat" USN and Vodka destroyers but their torps are mostly shit, that's the WG balance for you
try getting the omaha or the cleveland, the're pretty fun
go german if you want to lob AP and nothing else, but beware its tier 4, its a steaming pile

actually the main problem of mutsuki it's the speed of torpedoes together with their concealment, not 3x2 or her reload time (way longer than 30 sec btw)

I can't tell you what went on the IJN'S collective minds, but since I'm mildly autistic and a turbonerd, I went and read a shitton of reports the USN produced.
It all comes down to 'these people were completely retarded, never once listened to their science guys, relied on tech from 1925 and had fucking balls of steel to go up against us in those floating deathtraps'
There was practically nothing the USN thought it might copy or adapt from the IJN.
If you compare these reports to those about German procedures, equipment, training, etc., the report recommends immediately adapting certain procedures into training manuals, or advises whoever reads the report to get some piece of equipment reverse engineered ASAP, and so on and so forth.
The difference in the tech level and training methods etc. is startling.

That anon here, I've come to love Mutsuki's 10km and Cleveland is good when you stay far away (although she can't pen, it still deals well enough damage), also pressing defensive fire and seeing enemy planes drop like flies is an amazing experience.
New York is a piece of shit, though. It simply can't hit anything reliably although I lead correctly. I heard something about US BBs being a brawler but I had trouble citting Furry Taco merrily straightlining under 8km away.
