Well, small fish are 10 points each, medium 80 points each, and large 150. You'll only get small in the small hole so if you're aiming for points, large is almost literally ten times better. It just seems to have a higher fail rate, but that doesn't offset your potential gains.
The reason I said you want to get the reindeer as soon as possible is because each one boosts the amount of presents you get per day by 1. That's good because you can potentially get event limited drinks from there, but they seem to be pretty rare, so maybe it's not such a big deal.

It gives you +1 tickets as a tie up, but that's it. Same in the next event. You get tickets at the end of every stage and whenever you run into another roid, so it's probably actually a decent tie up. Nothing that impactful, but still decent.
Also, each medium is worth 8 small, so even a few can make one catch worth double a small hole catch. The rate of success I've got is roughly 50%, so it's probably worth your while, especially with the chance of catching a large fish.
