Most characters in TW3 look similar. That's the difference. They made similar faces and body types for the major characters, thus they have the best similar models.
Whereas DA wanted their characters to look distinct, especially since you were playing a story with a character of your own creation. Implementing a character creator into a game and merging that with other models is not simple.

I think the worst thing about the Dragon Age series is how they never manage to make their high fantasy setting feel truly magical. There just isn't this otherworldly feel to the setting that really should be there according to the lore. There's hardly any mystery and the fantastical stuff is so mundane and unimaginative that it doesn't add anything of value to the game that it is set against a fantasy backdrop. They have these concepts that sounds good on paper but never manage to manifest any of it in the games.

Consider for example the grey wardens. They are this ancient order that have managed to topple every not-zombie invasion since they started, nobody knows how they did it and the order is very small and forgotten at the start of Origins to the point of complete irrelevance. However another blight has begun and they're needed again so you're recruited.
Now you would expect such an old order to be wrapped in mysticism and tradition and the members to be these legendary warriors that most people found weird or were almost afraid of. Sort of like a witcher or something, but more respected. So when you're initiated into the order you'd think that it would involve a lot of things and that being a part of it would significantly change how the world perceived you. That's not the case however, you're just given dorkspawn blood to drink and then that's it, you're one of them now. Oh, but you're supposed to have this connection to the corrupted god/archdemon/undead dragon and stuff? Yeah, but that only plays into the game once or twice at most. You're not any different from how you were during the prologue, except now you can kill the final boss.
The grey warden order is just as silly and contrived as the hero academy at the start of NWN when push comes to shove and it's just a way for Bioware to force the player into the hero role but they completely neglect yo actually do something interesting with it. You don't get any special skills or anything like that, you're not given a perspective on the world that you may trust or not, you're not changed in any real way... It's just a hero ticket.
Everything in the Dragon Age games are like the grey warden order, conceptually it has potential but fuck you if you thought Bioware was even going to try.

While I agree that Origins did too little with the wardens considering they made an entire dlc about a crazy Warden on the verge of unlocking the secrets of blood magic, the blighted blood was never implied to give a warden any sort of superpowers other than delayed immunity to the blight and better awareness of darkspawn that the wardens perceive as simple noise. I think the Calling and Last Flight dealt with making the wardens look like a bunch of guys who have a lot of expectations placed on them but can't really deal with any of it pretty well,and it doesn't matter anyway because there won't be a warden in the games ever again

That's irrelevant, you can make the simplest of things magical and mystical. There wasn't any journey involved in becoming a warden and being one didn't really mean anything. Just like being a Spectre in Mass Effect also didn't mean anything.
You'd expect a group that has existed since the first blight and have pushed back every one to be mired in mystery and ritual, to pass on the torch and pass on what they have learned and allow the new generation to expand upon it they'd have to have these traditions and some sort of system so the knowledge doesn't get lost. Whether or not they're a lot more effective against darkspawn or not is besides the point, the order itself was just boring.
They always spell it out for you precisely what's going on in the dullest way possible and you're never required to think for yourself or use your imagination at all. Even the elves are uninteresting to the max even though they actually went through some effort to differentiate them from the generic elves you see in awful fantasy. It's not enough to say that something is awesome or weird or whatever, you have to actually make it that way and show it in the game. None of the neat ideas ever truly manifest in the game itself but are stuck in the lore somewhere.
You could make such a mundane thing as a locked door or a castle or whatever fascinating and fantastical if you just present it the right way but Bioware seem to be unable to grasp that. They keep turning good concepts into generic banalities.

Look at Inquisition -- the Inquisitor is literally unique in the world, but he/she still feels like a pointless plot device at times despite all that mystique surrounding their mark. Meanwhile, people still can't get over the Warden and Shepard who are basically common chumps who belong to an organization that goes from obscure and seemingly powerful to mostly mundane (see: Wardens being clueless morons, spectres having agents like that dumb Salarian who can't catch Kasumi in ME3).

That's not what I'm saying at all. Being one of the last wardens or the first human spectre is exactly that, "blamo, you're the chosen badass now and the tutorial is hardly over!!!". That is precisely the opposite of what I'm advocating. There needs to be a mythic journey there, both a physical one and a spiritual one. I'm not saying that the player needs to be some kind of superhero ninja menstruation artist,what I am saying is that the games lack that magical quality that makes fantasy special.

Honestly like I said it's a lot more of appreciating the cinematic lighters than anything and you're stuck with a similar perspective to what was already in the cutscene, but you can get some pretty interesting stuff now and again. It's especially fun for environments, but I haven't gotten any good screenshots yet.

As far as protagonists go you could do it right in many ways, either a predefined one that's very much a part of the world and you also get to explore and learn about or a mundane blank slate to contrast that against the fantastical things you encounter.
Anyway, the protagonist wasn't what I was talking about, it was the setting and the gameworld being presented like in a bad comic book or fanfictiony way that doesn't use the fantastical setting very well. Compare and contrast with the Souls series that presented its world in a very good manner. Or just about any fairy tale or folk story. When you have dragons in your setting and they're just another critter to deal with you're doing something wrong.

I don't know why I would expect anything, but it was so fucking cool seeing that, I just couldn't believe how nonchalant everyone was about it. Alistair was like that was the Nth High Dragon he just walloped.
Anyone played Bound by Flame? It's artstyle is very much like DA2/DA:I and the first boss you kill, the MC goes nuts over it. Which I liked. Very honest response.

I am not used to seeing stuff like that in RPGs. Fatalities in non-action games. And I was just stunned. I can only imagine how many other players felt that when they also came across something like that. If it's going to make people wanna replay your game or just that fight, until they get that extra little bit of dialogue, why not include it? Can you imagine the dedication it would pertain? And all of these players would then rave about it to their friends. Did we even have cool fatalities in DA:I?
