I can't speak for everyone, but I've always tried to help people and include people. I wanted to set up FearTheVoid so people could come and play together. We've tried some endgame content with varied success. Delve is a lot harder than what we thought. We have done some High Tier battlefields with a lot of success. Skirmish is fun to help people gear. Hopefully we can try Escha Zitah soon.
There are elitists who play the game. I'd rather play with people from /ffg/ and have slower progression and more casual play than to have to work my way into a more elite endgame LS and have to have my every move and piece of gear critiqued constantly.
XI to me has always been about the experience and playing with others to help them. It's what I enjoy about the game.

Christmas Orbfest starts on the 16th, which is two days from now.
I still have to clear Shadow's +++ battle, plus now I have to clear everything in Sephiroth's event before Wednesday so I can dedicate all my stamina to orbfest grinding. And Sephiroth's bonus battles (I'm guessing we don't actually get the MC2 until then) will drop while Orbfest is still going on.
And we don't get Vale of Memories until after Christmas. Unless they're planning on running Sephiroth's event, new Orbfest, and VoM all at the same time.

I have Ruinga R3. I don't remember needing Dark for medals (Garuda in XII?) that often but it's significantly cheaper to hone because of the three orb requirement. Ice is perpetually my lowest greater orb type but I'm not really sure why as almost nothing I use needs Ice.
I also don't want the Dark and NE orbs to go to waste honing an element that will be resisted in future EX battles. What does the common mage party ability set look like? Is there anyone here that uses magic over retaliate regularly?
I can't beat Jenova Death or the new FFIII dungeons with my current set of Thundaja, Firaja, Waterja even with max damage (180k out of 200k+ bosses).

According to kongbakpao only magic triggers the counters, spell swords do not count as magic.
Make sure you can bring down his magic damage. He pretty much only spams his Blizzaga (all). One isn't a problem, but he does it non stop with no way to slow him down. I had Hastega, Shellga, Full Break and Magic Breakdown and Eiko was still barely able to keep up. SG might have been very useful.
