It's 3 bosses deep, halfway to the 4th boss. The 1-handed untricked mode has 0 blt scaling and is a shitty strength weapon, the tricked mode is 2handed (no firearms) and consumes a % of your max HP every time you enter it, so you can't freely swap between forms to use a gun without killing yourself. Transforming can actually kill you.
As someone mentioned, the untricked->tricked transform attack has extremely boosted rally potential and with guidance rune can instantly restore the transformation cost if you hit something with it. Also does a fuckload of damage.
In pvp, though, you basically never want to un-transform it or switch weapons once you've transformed it. Fortunately it has an AoE explosion attack that's nearly an instantkill and doesn't cost qsb
What's a good weapon to use in the mean time whilst I aim for chikage and then bloodletter?

You can run them in a few hours once you know your way around. Beat game and then use your 80-90 char to run the basic ptnumeru dungeons in like 1 hour, then do ailing loran, then defiled, then lower loran then isz and ihyll.
All in all, you should be ablt to do a full chalice run in about 3 hours, less if you plan ahead and ask for help ahead of time for the annoying bosses like Rom, Loran Darkbeast, Headless Bloodletting Beast and Defiled Amy & Watchdog.
Here's a picture guide on the bare essentials to pick up. Afterwards, FRC spelunking is lots of fun actually (unless your farming 27.2% arcane or bloodtinge radial. that shit is suffering).

Unless you aim for ultra rare shit you'll get 'normal' 27% physicals in an few hours after opening D5 CRFs.
If you're ok with slightly lesser gems it could be even faster (example: 3 watchers drop tier 19 - 27% radials but one red aura shotgun watcher guarding lever can drop tier 18 - 26,3% gem and he respawns without remaking the dungeon).

It's very fast and when it connects, they get launched onto their ass which gives you the initiative and control over the situation. You can easily go from that knockdown moment to a finishing blow with the L2 Bomb.

It's like the highest difficulty in a dmc game. Everything practically 1-shots you so you have to dodge around and stunlock normal enemies wherever possible to play essentially without being hit, and work hard to wear down the hp of even regular enemies, who you can't just kill in a single stamina bar of stunlocks or a single visceral.
I like it. The enemies that don't go down easy and are legitimately threatening are the most fun ones and making every enemy like that makes everything much more enjoyable of a challenge.
When you are too powerful relative to your enemies (like the normal chalices and shitty watchers mooks) the game just feels like endgame darksouls where you approach everything by hitting R1 twice and moving on to the next target.

You can buy all of the materials in NG+ now. If you want to pvp, just blow through one of the short or easy chalices to grab the root chalice, and then buy the materials to create it in NG+ and you can start doing glyphs. Farming isn't so bad because you're not thoroughly clearing the whole damn thing, you're just going to kill a specific enemy or boss over and over. The runs are short and straightforward, no better or worse than any pother kind of farming in any souls game.

I would only go to 30 STR/50 BLT with bloodletter build and purely to use cannons and minigun to their fullest potential.

Yeah you can just go full BLT. main mode of damage you'll be using is the transformed version anyways. You can actually make a build using both just keep str at base for bloodletter or dex at base for chikage

I think rom was made from the knowledge gleaned via the research of the hamlet. S/He wasn't "granted eyes" by Kos directly, but rather granted them through the study of Kos and Kos' indirect influence on the hamlet. Mensis, with limited access to some of Byrgenwerth's knowledge, knows of Rom and knows that Kos is a thing, but probably don't have access to the Hamlet or its research directly in order to know that Kos is dead or that Rom was created by research and unethical arcane science rather than praying to celestial god.
It's worth noting that there's a very rom-like spider laying on the altar of despair that Ebrietas prays at.

It's extremely, extremely good, probably the best dlc weapon for pvp. The problem is that it's boring as hell. In a dlc full of crazy, goofy weapons it's a super bland estoc/halberd hybrid. It'll become meta once things settle down and the tryhards lose interest in the fun weapons.
