Old thread >>123602514

Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Does flying provide any benefits outside of combat?
>>
>>123784910
Flying is insanely fucking useful just because you will be able to move multiple provinces almost all the time across different terrain types. It also lets you attack into enemy territory without having to be adjacent to the province you want to take, so you can swarm multiple provinces at once. You can attack multiple provinces at once then regroup into a bigger force to take on any enemy force in the area. The flying nations pay for this by having their troops generally be pretty shitty at combat against non flyers (zots are basically size 2 units with size 1 stats, and caelum units are size 3 units with human tier stats). But it's still a very powerful attribute to have.

Assuming you have access to them, how do shadowbrand and firebrand compare to frostbrand?
>>
>>123801051
Firebrand is armor piercing, so it's often better against the target actually being hit, and shadowbrand has a large area of effect for its on-hit so it's good against chaff or when you're attacking a backline of mages that might have a few bodyguards. Both are used less frequently just due to gem cost.
>>
>>123801051
If you're just thugging then the frost brand is pretty much the best since it's so cheap compared to the others, and water gems aren't particuarly valuable compared to earth and death gems.
>>
>>123801051
Firebrand is better if you're looking to take on someone with undead chaff, since they're resistant to cold.

Shadow brand isn't worth the price. The other brands work as well or better outside of very specific circumstances.

I'm willing for peace. Borders same as they were. This isn't an admission of weakness - I can push you back, and will do so. But by doing so I will lose to the 3 (three) other nations invading me. And they'll get all my stuff and then swarm over you in turn.

If I can free up the forces i'm shoveling into you, I can at least make a fight of it. It'll give you time to rebuild/overrun someone else in the meantime. I like your tactics and moxy, and I consider the other nations cowards, so i'd prefer you end up in a better position, overall.

The manual doesn't explain it, what does "Bodyguard 3" mean? It says every bodyguard has 50% chance of being there when the commander is attempted to be assassinated, and the Bodyguard skill increases the chances, but it doesn't tell you how much.
Also I assume the amount of bodyguards in a battle is capped by maybe 5 or 10, right? Does Bodyguard increase the number of bodyguards there? or just the chances of them being there but without exceding the cap?
>>
>>123812429
bodyguard 3 means they will have +3 morale when set to guard commander during a battle
>>
>>123812429
It's a roll against the patience/assassin level of the assassin to determine whether or not the bodyguard shows up. Any unit set to guard adds 0 to the roll. Higher level assassins are more likely to avoid bodyguards, higher level bodyguards are more likely to show up.
>>
>>123812664

Except it also makes him worthless against just about any thug that isn't size fucking 6. He's going to try to trample golems and not do any damage to them. Even against smaller units, given that you're putting chains on him, you want him to be hitting people with them. The wings make him waste his time stomping around instead of enslaving two units per round.

Instead, let's discuss Swarm.

Swarm seems like a cool spell, but i've yet to be impressed by it. Have you used it for anything good? It buys a little time sometimes, but otherwise seems like a waste of a gem.
>>
>>123823280
It's good on dryad / naga assassins. It works like a skelly-spam spell, albeit at a gem cost. As is the case with most duels, the winner is usually the one that brings more friends, and a swarm of insects will kill most mages.
>>
>>123823280
It's pretty useful for a path 1 spell even if it does need a gem to use. What can be fun at times is overwhelming armies with bugs whilst battlefield wide effects are going on in the background killing everything else.
>>

>Even against smaller units, given that you're putting chains on him, you want him to be hitting people with them. The wings make him waste his time stomping around instead of enslaving two units per round.
Chains are MR-negates, so you'd fail to enslave units at least half the time anyway.

More importantly, 37 damage has a very good chance of killing most troops. If it does kill them, you obviously can't enslave them.
>>
>>123824452
This map doesn't seem very well designed with the clustered terrain. Can I have my cap circle province though?
>>
>>123824534
You're right that the chains are more likely to kill than enslave, but he's also right that you don't want wings and chains on the same unit. If you're going to use him to trample chaff, you may as well give him a second shield.

It's not something you'd want to use often, but if you're dealing with size 6 SCs defended by chaff I could see it working well. Trample is also surprisingly nasty against smaller thugs, doing 20AP damage if they fail to dodge and doing 1 damage even if they do dodge.

The real issue here is that Pedoseion is a bad chassis for trampling things.
>>
>>123825965

Why is he a bad chassis for trampling things? As opposed to hitting them, I mean - obviously if you have use for a tough earth/blood caster you should have him that role rather than meleeing.

Also keep in mind that Pedobearseion is a pretty easy SC to get for blood/earth nations, much easier than the ele royalty, or the demon lords. If all you got is a pedo, you might want to thug him, as you might lack anti RoS options otherwise.
>>
>>123825965
That is an incredibly specific situation, but yeah I guess it'd work for that. If you have a trampler set to attack large monsters, will it wade through the smaller units, or chase after them to try to crush them once they're in melee?
>>
>>123825416

Are you saying you don't

>>
>>123826304
>Why is he a bad chassis for trampling things? As opposed to hitting them, I mean
Trample is a bit riskier than just attacking since it's somewhat vulnerable to units with ethereal and/or high defense. If your enemy deploys them they can take a very long time to kill.

When you can trample 10+ squares per round there's a big difference in how fast chaff gets cleared and it might be worth the risk, but I think Pedoseion would clear chaff nearly as fast with Jade Armor (quickness) instead of trample.

If you're not improving your chaff clearing speed much I wouldn't bother with trample.

>>123826354
>If you have a trampler set to attack large monsters, will it wade through the smaller units, or chase after them to try to crush them once they're in melee?

It's an event chain.

You need either an astral mage with S4+ or a mage of each element with at least level 2, otherwise you get attacked once each season by a bunch of mages and elemental creatures. If you use one mage of each element instead of the astral mage, you are 'deemed worthy' and get a high tier mage of each element to join you

He should definitely have bigger and better communions, but updated Atlantis actually has solid research if it can build and keep coastal forts. It also has massable W2S1 mages, though they're definitely more expensive than thaumaturgs.
>>
>>123852154
True, I didn't mean Atlantis had bad research, just that Sceleria should have better due to only ever paying money for thaums and indie priests.

Tangentially, the UW patch has seemed to help a fair bit with water nations getting onto land and being relevant there, which is always their stumbling block.
>>
>>123852327
I agree with your tangent. The coastal stuff does exactly what it's supposed to - it both rewards underwater nations for getting on land and makes them better at fighting once they're there. MA Pelagia is actually strong as fuck now, though that's more about having recruitable RoS casters in the era of communions and skeleton hordes than the fact that they can now recruit heavy infantry on land.
>>
>>123852327
>just that Sceleria should have better due to only ever paying money for thaums and indie priests.
Having played as Sceleria, I went along with the indie priests thing and was disappointed. I get why it's good (you get almost 30 longdead / turn from the cost of one fort + lab) but I never felt like I was lacking chaff, and generally wanted more thaumaturgs instead.

You can do everything. You can get all the boosters into all the elemental royalty and summon up elemental armies. If they're taken, you can get Telkhines for SCs or leading poison resistant armies.
Also, where are your blood slaves? Or are you actually just spending them?
>>
>>123854047
Summon things. Summon million of things.

Even if you use trash or overpriced summons that's enough goddamn gems to field an army of summer lions/trolls backed by every single buff possible and fully geared scs or some shit.
LIke, i don't know what your research is, what your mages are (but berry gets lots of good mages), but you can field so much extra firepower through summoning.

Drop some globals as well, if only to deny them to your opponents.

>>
>>123854328

>>
>>123854047
Assuming all the elemental royalty is taken (judging from the fire king in the picture), first get all of the globals you want. If nothing else, get the gem generating globals. You're Berytos, so you should be able to cast basically any of them. Once you're done with that -

Spend all your fire gems on boosters, flame spirits, fire snakes if you want burning chaff, and Flames from the Sky. You can also summon flame jellies once you get an underwater lab. They're actually good blockers.
Spend all your air gems on boosters, eagles if you need to bust forts, winged shoes for getting commanders around, storm staves for your stormcaller legions, cloud trapeze casts, call of the winds for patrolling your provinces, and pills of water breathing
Spend all your water gems on boosters and stuff to take over the ocean since you're apparently fighting an aquatic nation.
Spend all your earth gems on boosters, iron dragons, hidden in sand/underneath, troll kings, and a bunch of different magic items that you probably already have.
Spend all your nature gems on outfitting the horde of thugs that you should have from your demon summons
>>
Hey domg please help a noob.

If all the global slots are filled, and i try recasting one of the globals already on, what happens? It tests the new cast against the old cast? It test the new cast again one of the 5 globals?

>>
>>123854660
Tests vs the same one, but it's in the manual so....
>>
>>123854660
It casts against the existing version of the same global. If you cast a different global, it checks against one of the existing ones at random. This is in the manual and you are a retard, but you already knew that.

Your informants claim a local warlock is preparing a major summoning. You may send a blood mage to assist him, some priests to incite the mob against him or armed men to flush him out.

How much blood does it need for the ritual to be successful? Is a mage with B2 enough?
>>
>>123857182
B2 is enough, but you're still more likely to summon hostile demons than you are to bind one. You do have a chance of binding Magoth, though, which is cool. If you can spam Hellbind Heart, you also might get a chance to charm Belial or Furcas.

If you do nothing, you get attacked by demons. The event chain is mostly bad. Preaching gives a small chance of an angel and a decent chance of a mob, patrolling lets you fight fewer demons, and the blood magic still has a chance to let you get a free circle master and some fiends.

That said, playing against AIs is trivial to begin with, so what you do here matters very little.

I know this might look like an innocent post as >>123864280 and >>123865790 seem to believe, but I would just like to remind you all that Illfraud shills are a very real thing in all social media and especially /domg/, hell, /domg/ was started by shills but thankfully the free people took it away from them even though the battle goes on (ever wonder why sometimes the links to the pirated versions are removed for a long time? that's right, shills removing it protecting illfraud)

You might be wondering how in the hell is this post a shill, he's not even trying to sell the game he's actually shitting on it? Illfraud are a smart bunch of kikes and know not only how to sell shitty games, but also how to market shitty games. Normally, products will be marketed by their good qualities, but this isn't the case when your product is 100% shit, what good things can you say about dominions? nothing, that's what, and the only people attracted to 100% shit is the kind of people that like 100% shit.

This key axiom is as subtle as paradoxical it is, exactly by its nature is it hidden from people and hard to realize and understand, which is one of the strengths of this technique. Thanks to this, the poor sods who actually buy into all this never think they're actually being tricked or anything like that, after all, why would someone try to sell shit? On one hand I can't blame them, this is a completely rational thought process that makes sense 99% of the time, but Illfraud is the 1%, Illfraud is the complete opposite irrational snake, tricking people because 'no one would do that, right?'

Needless to say, the quoted post is a classic textbook example of Illfraud shill, and as such you should do what's appropiate. I would also like to add, as a side note, that it's been now 2 weeks since the release of Conquest of Elysium 4, and there's already 10 (ten) DLC, including such bullshit as the Hoburg Enhancer class, Hoburg Troll King class, HD graphics pack, etc. Disgusting

This is probably a dumb question but I've been playing a lot of CoE 4 and I've been lurking this general for a while and I've been thinking about getting into Dominions 4.

I'm a turn-based-strategy buff, but I consistently enjoy tactical TBS games, like X-COM or Jagged Alliance, and I often find myself overwhelmed playing things like Civ or 4X games. I usually feel like there's a 'correct' or 'optimal' way to play rather than being free to just screw around, and it seems like something I can never figure out.

Is Dominions 4 like this? Even if it is, is it simple enough to just bumble around in for a while and come to grips with, or do I need to sit down and read step-by-step guides on how to do things? I won't ask if it's worth buying because I'm sure all of you will say yes and I'm very prepared to buy it, I'm just really on the fence.
>>
>>123873576
>Is Dominions 4 like this?

Some people in this general will have you believe that it is, but really, everything is situational. Sure you should have an overall idea of how a faction plays before playing it, but after that it's pretty much about using what your current situation gives you.
>>
>>123873576
There is no optimal way to play dominions. You can optimize your pretender and expansion, but after that it's all downhill. You will make mistakes, your opponents will too, how you make those mistakes into victories is the important part.
>>
>>123873576
Well, there are some things that are generally considered to be "wrong" in Dominions, but very few that are unambiguosly "right," simply because there are so many options and a significant portion of them is at least viable in the right situation, against the right opponents. It's no coincidence that "it depends" is so often given as advice here that it's become a meme. Experimentation is a big part of gitting gud, even for experienced players, so using a gimmicky or outright bad strategy sometimes doesn't need to be a bad thing as long as it's a lesson learned. Also, since diplomacy and subterfuge plays a significant role (or can do so at any rate), even decidedly subpar strategies can sometimes win you the game with a bit of diplomancy and luck.

And even if there was an objectively "right" way to play Dominions, most of /domg/ is bad enough that they'll never discover it.

>>123873576
every nation has 1 2 or 3 strategies which are better and you will be expected ( if you want to challenge the biggest player on the map at least) to use in the early/mid game.afterall you can only recruit a dozen of fixed national unit with gold and with small magical research budgets there won't be more than 3-4 choices for " what's the first spell my nation should go for".
after that your magical capabilities slowly open up and all nation will have access to a big number of general strategies that mostly depend on the situation.
Even if there are only 2 good summonable air magic units, you can deploy and move them around the map in a handful of ways; choosing where and when to attack and what kind of war you will be fighting is more important than " what are the different choices for units in my army" and might be a good way to justify summoning or crafting "alternative" stuff.

>>
>>123878891
You can test all you want as EA R'lyeh and I won't stop you. Hell, you'd probably have more fun testing battles with them than actually playing them.
>>
>>123878840
Eh, the best surprises come from good (or sometimes just unorthodox) scripting and/or sneak attacks. You can't really test against those.

If you're just mashing armies together, testing gives you a definite edge, but in that case I think it's a justified edge because our opponent is obviously a shitter anyway (or AI, which is the same thing).
>>
I don't test because it's boring.
>>
>>123879327
There's too many variables to consider imho to think recreating battles is always accurate. Will the enemy use his earth mages to cast bladewind or iron warriors? Is his thug immediately going to attack or wait 5 turns in the corner? What buffs is he going to cast? Etc.
>>
Trying to figure out a good pretender for MA Sceleria. So far I have it narrowed down to these two.

Imprisoned Titan of the sea
Dom7
W9E4
O3Cold3G3Mag1

vs
Imprisoned DemiLich
Dom7
W9E4D5F1
O3S3Cold3G3Mag1

The Magic 1 doesnt decrease MR, but does help out ever so slightly with communions, as well as the fact that my basic labrat is not a research powerhouse. My biggest concern is if production scales are worth dumping big time or not, since I can expand just fine without resources, and any units I use are mages, vestals or longdead. However, I do need all the money i can get, and even prod 0 can be helpful.
>>
>>123879701
That's pretty much what I said.

In straight-up army vs army situations it's useful, but you can't really test against an opponent who uses proper scripting.

The only time I rely heavily on testing is during expansion, when I want to know if my expansion party can take a certain province without too many losses. Sometimes encounters that look 50-50 statwise can turn out pretty one-sided (in a good way or a bad way), and testing helps with that.

Sloth is perfectly fine to dump (I personally don't go lower than 2 just to ensure that you can recruit some indy archers or crossbows if you can fort a province that has them), but the titan can move around and do stuff in the late game, which is definitely a useful thing to have. If you go for the titan chassis, I'd go Sloth 2/Cold 1 for slightly better income. If lowering your dom to 6 or even 5 would get you another scale, I'd go for that as well since you're going to be building a lot of temples regardless.

Yes, but those spells have limited range and leaders tend to be in the back. Most evocation spells, like Shadow Bolt are going to miss because accuracy scales off of distance. If you do have a long range 100 precision spell like Soul Slay or Mind Burn, however, those will snipe the commanders.

>tfw a previous advice also works for me
This has just happened to me too.

The event happened last turn so I moved a blood mage there, but when this turn started, demons attacked. They didn't even wait for me to join to the rituals ;_;

So:
>this cutie gets into the bar and slaps your butt

How do I seduce this cutie without getting destroyed by him? I can take there 20 hellbind heart casters or so, but I'm not even sure if that would do something, since I can't move 20 mages for nothing. If i get it it's fucking awesome, but I don't know if it's worth moving all of my troops there.

I want to kill the other people there so i can spam hellbind heart, and my regular bats are probably not going to harm him, right?

So just attack + flee some times until my regular bats kill the adds and spam hellbind with a barrier of xibalban warriors to protect my mages from belial?

Please send help ;_;

Also: why does he have a face in the groin?

Here it is a closer look of him. I'm hoping invulnerability avoids it from getting killed by regular xibalban warriors with shitty Strength.

you can enslave and GoR him too if you have S casters.
anything that causes fatigue without doing damage (curse of stones stellar cascades ghost grip sleep etc) will help immensely

Lance crits can kill him, but he'll rout your bat warriors very quickly due their shitty morale. Note that unless you also have a significant amount of HP set to guard, this will cause an HP rout and make your casters run away unless you bring a huge number (which also also, incidentally, are more likely to likely to kill him).

Starting out with hellbind heart spam is probably your best bet if you can bring 20 casters, since they'll just bind the serpent fiends as well. Hellbind heart x whatever and retreat should do the trick, assuming they all fly.
