Gateway works in the same way as CFWs, using a system exploit to gain control over the 3DS software. It's only difference from CFWs is they require the card to be inserted before you can use their software.
Sky3DS is completely different, and works by mimicking a real cartridge well enough to fool the 3DS into running it.

Sure, any game that can be used as an entrypoint can be used exactly the same by running as a ROM from a Sky3DS. But an entrypoint is only the first part of the puzzle, you need further exploits in the system software to be able to run CFW. A very rough analogy, imagine robbing a bank, an entrypoint like Ninjhax can get you in the front door, but you need more than that to get into the vault.

Yes, browserhax loads the hbmenu same as any other entrypoint. You won't be able to set up menuhax on 4.2 though, it needs 9.0 minimum to work since that's when themes were introduced.

You don't even need the copy of OoT, you can set up CFW using browserhax. In fact, browserhax is easier and more reliable to use on N3DS. General recommendation is to use it only for the initial setup for menuhax as an entrypoint.

you can extract them with savedatafiler, but after that you're pretty much going to have to use a custom built tool. I think there are a few for Pokemon but that's it.

I can vouch for Pokemon Omega Ruby being updated to 1.4 with the patch working and going online without updating system firmware. Just acquired the Sly's Zoroark from Mystery Gift on Omega Ruby v1.4 with system firmware 9.5.0-22. it seems Pokemon doesnt use NNID services or Nver so it can go online on older firmware. not sure if the same applies to emuNAND but that's what I can vouch for and it's up to you to see if the same works for emuNAND. seeing as emuNAND is made from a modified sysnand dump and run differently for hack enabling and signature patches for .cia files and run separately to prevent bricking, then most likely it should work the same the main difference being all the modifications that enable hacking.

rxtools has those functions and options out of the box and can do a few nifty things on its own, but sometimes may behave a little odd with some things
cakes is trimmed down to the absolute necessities, e.g. emunand, signature patch, etc.

gpSP runs pretty well. I haven't had much slowdown. One issue I've noticed however is that the libretro version has some incompatibilities with some save formats for whatever reason, for example Mario Vs. Donkey Kong won't detect the correct save type unlike on Android. Meanwhile mGBA drops frames, though it's still pretty fast considering there's no dynarec.

rip tho since eShop access even with the eShop spoofer is blocked on <10.1 firmware and unless you have *hax2.5 access on 10.1-10.3 or emuNAND you can't grab the update. keep the save data backup as it still can be useful for recovering your save.

hmmmm odd. worst case scenario keep the backup safe then start a new save then copy all the data from the backup save to the new save using PKHeX and export the modified new save and make sure to not overwrite your old backup at all then import the modified new save using svdt. or maybe delete the v1.4 patch in the system settings and reinstall it with the eShop then hope it does things when you load up Omega Ruby to make the save compatible with the new version? how old is the backup save? is it from before the 1.4 patch?

this helped me erase my Smash Bros save after losing update data and not being able to run 1.1.2 Smash on 9.5.0-22 firmware. now i can play smash with save data but i cant play with the latest Smash updates since i cant run it and now i cant even reinstall it because of the Nver update. but i have cubic ninja so maybe when smea releases a 3ds cheat code loader that doesn't require the latest Gateway Ultra or NTR CFW 3.0 or spider3dstools + KazoWAR arcode + lunarcookies QR code generator i can give up hope on a 9.5.0-22 kernel exploit and update so i can get everything back and play the Triforce Heroes Special Demo that requires something in the NAND that came in since 9.9 firmware. preferably want the kernel exploit lol

That should be all you have to do. If a firmware update is required for the Gateway cart (somewhat rare) it will automatically happen when you try to launch.

Okay I dont know if I am retarded or fucking what but I am at my wits end. I have installed rx tools and unlinked my emunand and sysnand and even installed mset downgrader and the rxtools fbi injector. But it seems like everything else after this is fucked and google just keeps me going around in circles and giving me a massive headache.
Regardless if I install a CIA in sysnand or emunand the piece of shit refuses to actually add to the homemenu, and instead just adds black fucking boxes of death with no description. Not only that but I even tried launching cias THROUGH the injected FBI and it just fucking black screens and crashes.

Using the firmware.bin from NAND instead of the downloaded one on your SD card.
If you're not using the one from NAND then you brick when you run sysupdater. If you don't use the one on your SD card, you can't run an updated emunand.
So I'm clueless about cfw for the most part right now but I've bought a n3ds on 9.0 from someone online and they messaged me saying; " by the way i have enabled the ds profile on the sysnand do you want me to remove it ? if you are going to use gateway then it's best to keep it.".
