/indie/ is a proposed general for indie games in general, such as LISA, Yume Nikki, OFF, Bastion, Machinearium, Braid, Limbo, Axion Virge, Guacamele etc.

Are we allowed to simply post games into the main thread if we don't know enough games in a specific category to meaningfully make a pastebin? Because I can probably provide a few good obscurities if so.
>>
Yeah, we can make pastebin lists collectively.

Just list the game and the genre, and where to get the game if you want.

Well, OK, here are a couple of suggestions that just floated into my head. Ignore/add them as you wish. Both are free, and I think that both are obscure enough that they might have otherwise been forgotten about.

1st Person:

Imscared: A pixelated nightmare.
(Don't be fooled by the looks, this is one of the most unnerving free horror games ever made, and doesn't rely on jumpscares, a 'stalker' or crappy flashlights).

Misc.

Experiment 12
(12 artsy indie devs produced a game like a chain letter, developing a chapter each and passing it between themselves. The result is certainly interesting and memorable, with strong atmosphere)

4chan thought this was spam until I removed the links, but both are easily googleable.

maybe this is more of a discussion for /utg/ . . .

do you guys think that the overwhelming success of Undertale is a sign of things to come for indie games? It was crowdfunded, made by one guy, and only available on PC, yet it's one of the most discussed games this year, maybe more than Fallout 4 even.
surely more will try to do what he did?
>>
>>122150704
no
>>
>>122150558
>crowdfunded or made freely
>very, very small dev team, definitely no more than 10 but more like no more than 5
>not commercially backed
>not commercially distributed on any platform other than digital

I think it should be pretty clear at this stage. Games are getting to the point where you don't need a large dev team to make them. One person can make a game alone, or even a small band of people can just make a game. The goal is generally not commercial success, but to just create what they want. Basically like indie movies, indie music, etc.

Outside of its bubble I can't see Undertale making too many waves. It's not a game normalfags will have even heard of, so its impact on the industry will be minimal. I'm sure there will be clones and games best described as "Undertale but with X", but on a whole there won't be a significant numerical increase in indie/crowdfunded games (nor interest in them).

Bumping with something relevant. I'm making extended versions of LISA's OST. I've really never edited audio files before, but this shit was rather easy and coming out well. I started near the beginning of the week and I'm halfway through Joyful's soundtrack, extending them around 15 minutes. I'll pick up the slack during the weekend but Painful's OST will certainly take some time. Not sure when I'll start uploading. Soonish maybe.

The soundtrack to LISA seriously needs more love. It's a real fucking gem. I think I found around one remix of a song on Soundcloud. Shame. Anyone have any songs they really want extended? Input and advice if you have any would be cool too.
>>
Would the core Touhou series qualify as indie games?

>>122160029

>>
>>122160484
It was made by one guy and was kinda under the radar for some time, but now, it's exploded to crazy proportions. Still, I think it falls under Indie. But /jp/ is already all about that shit so I don't think it's presence is too relevant here.

Basically.

/indie/ is a home for all things indie games. But if there's a general for an indie game already, you're probably better off discussing that game there. Similar to /smtg/ and /pg/. Persona is a sub-series of SMT, but Persona outgrew SMT. Now they just have their own generals.

This place is hopefully a home for the indie game community and indie games that don't have a home.

Don't quit the game. The game is less punishing than you think, there's even ways to quit the game without well, quitting the game

no? that's not what happened at all. The first /irg/ or /igg/ was made by a tripfag from the 'last' /v/ lisa thread back in early september - before undertale's release, as an experimental thing. It was okay but's let's be honest most talk was still about lisa at the time - when undertale was released it got overshadowed by /utg/ and then died. And now it's come back made by folks from /utg/.

I wish secondary characters in LISA got some more development. I'm not talking like sidequests for everyone, that'd make the game too bloated, but it could use some campfire banter scenes or a "talk to party" option with a few lines for each member. I get the idea that you're not supposed to become attached to any of them, but it's still a shame that most of those quirky, intriguing characters get only 3-4 lines of development, and some party members like Clint Olympic or Rage are complete non-entities.

Maybe it'd be possible to hack some conversation options in using RPG Maker...

So what's the appeal of undertale? Not trying to be rude or something, just genuinely interested. I've only played it for about an hour some days ago and it seemed like a pretty normal jrpg to me with some puzzles thrown in and gimmicky battle system (still not much different than usual). Does it get better or it's just not my game? What's there that made so much noise? Should I pick it up again?

Its good at medium awareness and has pretty enjoyable characters, music and characters.

Its worth playing, like most games in the current indie line up.

Just... try to avoid the autistic side of the fanbase.

Yeah, that would have been nice. Probably not too difficult either. Just do what was done in Joyful and when you enter a Inn for the first time you get a cutscene with each active party member saying something before going to bed.

Though it'd have to be generic statements and not a full on conversation between characters. Otherwise you'd have to create a full conversation for all 30 party members interacting with one another.

Luckily most of the party members really are the kind of people who just say what's on their mind rather than have an actual conversation with each other.

Undertale has its own general but if you legitimately want an opinion from here

>10/10 soundtrack
>Characters are quirky, have lots of heart and get decent development
>Game is full of "little things", reactions, results and consequences for everything. Also the interface and game abstractions are turned into storytelling devices, there is an in-universe explanation for everything from saving the game to the concepts of "boss enemies" which results in a very immersive experience
>The gameplay is simple but unusual and fun enough for a playthrough

It picks up slowly (the Ruins are a bit of a drag, yeah) but I'd say it is absolutely worth a playthrough.
>>
>>122222846
I appreciated Undertale way more after the first playthrough.
Trying out the different paths, all the characters, the music, it's a pretty solid game.
>>
>>122223232
I was also thinking of something along the line of

>enter inn or use a campfire
>"Sleep or talk to someone before going to bed?"
>pick a character from the available roster
>a short branched 1v1 conversation starts, with maybe 2-3 advancing conversation trees for each character as you progress through the game

An idea I had in store for my RPG Maker game, but...hah...
>>
>>122222846
Look, don't get me wrong, Undertale is good but for me it could have been so much better with some few adjustments in the story. I feel like if the main character fell on a world that was an actual threat for him (which in the original is not considering how you can befriend everyone on sight), with actual enemies and he HAD to leave in order to survive, it would have been better. But that's just me.
>>
Has anyone played Always Sometimes Monsters?
Looks interesting but it also seems like one of those "walking simulator" RPGs that don't balance plot and atmosphere with some fun gameplay. I still like those kind of games sometimes but only if the story and atmosphere are totally worth it.

>>122222846
The fanbase is starting to get obnoxious, but don't let that stop you at all.

>great story, characters, writing, funny, also a great soundtrack
>choices that weigh heavy on the player
>breaks the 4th wall, very clever game
>tons of spoopy secrets and weird things hidden in the game
>battle system, basically bullet hell but in-between waves you attack or talk to enemies
>short game, 6-9 hours on one play through, but there's no filler
>replayable far beyond the norm, over 30 possible endings and the game adapts lots of dialog based on your choices

It's a must play for sure. I can't imagine how someone could dislike it.
>>
>>122225709
I got it from some bundle and never played it. But i heard its okay.
>>
>>122225709
Played it, beat it. The game is interesting from multiple perspectives but the one thing that really drives people against it is that there's no way to get a 'good end' where everyone is happy.

I won't spoil anything about it not even in spoiler tags but if you /need/ a happy ending, I'd stay away.

For anyone that likes tower defense I'd suggest you check out Unholy Heights.

It's a game where you recruit demons by giving them a home in a tenement building. In exchange for giving them a home they will pay their rent a defend your building from villagers, mercnaries, the local mob, etc.

It's a nice time burner and can be an addictive game if you don't any games on your backlog. It's relatively simple to pickup on the mechanics. The monsters roles differ from one another: Tanks, mages, bruisers, etc. The soundtrack is also nice to listen, though it might get repetitive as it does not contain many songs.

It's on a site called Playism in case some asks, it's also about 4 bucks.

Some people in this thread were kind of interested in that game I was making, so fuck it. Have more planning progress:

http://pastebin.com/1Fia3qLV

I'm also working on the engine stuff, because ideas are useless without an implementation. Currently struggling with getting movement in the game to feel natural.

This is probably something I should take to /agdg/ but that general is basically made of cancer and we need content anyways

C# is actually such a nice language. I've never used it before and I've been very satisfied so far.

>Implying
The world IS going to get better and there were a couple of plot points that indicated towards it. And if you made him go back, he'd have too much guilt out of leaving the world to die. Besides, all the people would be grateful and he'd literally have the rest of his life handed to him on a silver platter by them.
Reminder that you're also the god of the world and if you make Niko go back to his life you chose some random kid over all your people. Putting the sun back on is a win/win situation for everyone. Niko would suffer for a while but he'd be happy with his new friends. What says he can't go back if he doesn't break the bulb either? The entity might have been lying to get the world to die.
>>
>>122331508
Pretty sure the game handily tells you that the world is going to die no matter what you do, putting the bulb back in just means the people get to see the sun before they die, which isn't worth sacrificing a child's happiness over.

Also you're not the god of the world, the thing that talks to you in the dialogue boxes and fucks with your desktop is the god of the world, it just tells you and everyone else that you're the god to get you to do what it can't.

>>122332180
Also, in a meta kind of way, the game itself IS the world, and it's in a unstable incomplete state on the way to death. It will end when you eventually uninstall it and wipe it clean from your harddrive (or your computer crap out on you, whatever comes first).
>>
>>122332180
>the game handily tells you that the world is going to die no matter what you do
Only that girl in the Barrens said that. No one else, not even the entity, mentioned it.
>which isn't worth sacrificing a child's happiness over
So Niko doesn't care about the world? Pretty sure that he'd save it if he were an adult, though that's more of a speculation. It's not like he's going to be full of despair if he stays in there.
>Also you're not the god of the world
>that explanation
You're just pulling that out of your ass, nowhere did it say that.
Maybe we should ask the devs some of the facts, though I don't know if they'd be willing to explain the plot stuff we didn't see.

Seeing as /rlg/ is about RPGs, I would say indie-developed arcade games with elements of randomization fall under our umbrella.

I love how LISA managed to create such insanely silly moments while maintaining a good atmosphere divided by zany and serious.

Also bump.

LISA the Painful is the main game and covers the main story. Pain mode is the hardmode to this game and has you make really fucking tough decisions. I suggest it if your a person whose accepting of his losses and wants a really raw playthrough wit a bit of extra content thrown in.

LISA the Joyful is a followup to the events immediately after Painful's ending and presents a conclusion to the story.

LISA the First is a prequel game made years back. It's a Yume Nikki clone that provides a bit of context to the rest of the story. Playing this I advise isn't to necessary. I suggest watching a playthrough of it. It's like, 45 minutes long of a game.

Have fucking fun, this series is fucking great.

I agree with the other anon, but fuck i've already typed all this shit out.

LISA the First : Yumi Nikki like top-down explore the world type of game. Its not hard at all its just explore the game and piece together the story.

LISA the Painful: Side Scrolling RPG which has pretty big difficulty spikes at the beginning of the game, ( plus a really shitty mini game which will most certainly kill a ton of party members on your end the first time, after you find a few party members you like, it should get easy up until the end of the game.
LISA the Joyful : DLC to the game which expects you to already be good and familiar with the combat system. Difficulty is pretty hard since due to plot reasons, you have no party members, thus having to deal with groups of enemies all by yourself.

LISA the Painful has a difficulty setting which disables save scumming and with the item of JOY, its considered another difficulty setting since taking JOY increases your attack drastically making battles curve stomps.

If you want to play LISA, expect a difficult time.

Chronologically, LISA the First.

But honestly, most people agree to say skip LISA the First and play LISA the Painful then LISA the Joyful.
