How does the normalization retrofit work?

5% on the first tier is pretty laughable if it's actually 5%.
AP has 5°;
5°x1.05=5.25°;
At tier 3 the retrofit gives you 7.50%:
5°x1.075=5.375°

Taking the values in pic related for the upper frontal plate and applying the formula some nerd wrote up here:

[effective armor]=142mm/sin(x)
with x = 22° (no normalization) the effective armor is 379 mm.
with x = 27° (default normalization of AP round) the effictive armor is 312.8 mm.
with x = 27.375 (tier 3 retrofit) the effective armor is 308.8 mm.

You get a whopping effective armor reduction of
4 mm
compared to no retrofit if shooting at the upper frontal plate of a T-64 with AP.

This can't be true, can it? Please tell me I made a mistake somwhere.

no way, amx already has much better chance at penetrating a side armore of mbt just becouse it has 81 pen and other apc with 20mm has only 75.
14.5 will have 60 pen at most. they will probably add powerful ATGM and put in on level 3.

Ok, I am still new at this game, but it feels like enemy TDs can't pen me unless they get close enough for me to spot them and hit them back twice as hard...same for enemy LTs and AFVs.

TDs are indeed not as effective as ATGMs on long ranges, simply becouse ATGMs are much more accurate and can penetrate a lot more. Vechicles without ATGMs pretty much make most of their damage by targeting other soft targets or flanking MBTs. Anyway, that doesn't makes MBTs OP becouse their vision sucks so hard.

And no, you can't dodge that shit if enemy is skillful enough. Arty will predict your next move(usually it's reversing if you are idle) and ATGM will keep his rocket in sky for half of the duration of flight to make your warning sign appear too late.

I think this is the main problem with AW atm...the playerbase is not skilled enough for proper engagements yet.

Hopefully it gets better in time. I like tank video games, but WG and Gaijin have been hateful to the players lately

Better than WoT. Arty isn't one-hit KO. Playerbase seems to not be as retarded as WoT but that might just be a question of time. They're not jewing as hard as WT or WoT. Graphics are okay. Nothing too great. Some maps need improvements optimisation wise.

Balance is a bit wobbly right now. Lower tiers feel pretty even but tiers 6 and up seem skewed towards main battle tanks.
Graphics is worse than WT at the moment to be honest, but it runs on the Cryengine and there's still a lot of time to get better.
Personally I'm having a blast going 90mph and doing wheelies and drifts with my VBL.

Swingfire is excellent late game if your team is focused on defense.
It can hold certain areas on most maps with relative ease, because almost always, it's a handful of MBTs that are left on the other team. It fucking sucks when you have to actively chase down you enemies though.

Yes the problem is that the drum magazine offers only marginally more damage than a single shot while exposing you for much longer. Not only that but it pings the map three times, and if you're in the same position firing for 3 shots the pings get consecutively smaller until they point out your exact position.

Paladin gets ~450 damage on a 12 second reload, during which it can relocate, making it very easy to be outputting its full damage without getting counterbatteried.

Compare this to the PzH2000 which gets ~250 a shot for 3 shots with 3 second interdrum and ~16 second drum reload.

It has to stay in position for 6 seconds to fully drum out during which an enemy can easily aim in all the way and drop shells on you (Paladin deals 750 if it HE pens which happens all too often against arty). This means that in order to avoid being counterbatteried the PzH 2000 must not utilize its full DPM effectively, while the Paladin can.

Also if you compare the stat cards the Paladin has more DPM in the first place.

A skill that would reduce pings on consecutive shots would be nice as it would make it more capable of utilizing the damage its given. Of course you would still be drawn while firing so the drawback is still there.

I think artillery commanders/crew skills should be centered around utilizing support shells and less about the actual damage anyway.

There's no way to fix the shot delay. It's either that or ghost shells, especially with autocannons.
When you fire in the client, the server just recieved the information that you are firing and then your shots start leaving the barrel.
If you make it so the shots synch up with the client (aka make both the action and the firing client side) then you'll experience tons of ghost shells. Since you'll be aiming at a target and it LOOKS like you're hitting them, but in reality your shells are only hitting the target client-side, you end up with a system worse than the current one.

Yeah, shot delay is in every match, but you can learn it and aim accordingly. You can't get around ghost shells in WoT when they're both client-side but the calculation is done server-side.

tl;dr: there's no way to fix it, get used to it

I'm not saying Obsidian themselves are faultless, they seriously need to patch up the netcode as I've seen plenty of teleporting tanks, random rubberbanding, and of course server stuttering.
Though keep in mind tanks move MUCH faster in AW so you have to lead more. And there's many more tanks that have salvos and those salvos are much bigger compared to WoT.
And all that means I personally would rather have a delay I could get used to than be given an all smiles client-side then told to fuck off when the server tells me half my autocannon salvo did nothing.

Only at low tiers. At high tiers, AP shells fly only slightly slower or faster than AW's.
APCR almost always flies faster than AW's AP, HEAT almost always flies faster too. The main difference is tanks move slower in WoT meaning less leading is required and the average engagement range is also shorter in WoT.

As far as leading goes between both games, AW requires MUCH more of it than WoT does, so the only ghost shells you really see are against fast tanks at medium-long range while in AW you have the shot delay so your shells are consistently delayed across all ranges but means you won't see any ghost shells.

The most annoying thing I've seen happen is when 2 AFVs side hug while on the move and since they're aiming for each other at point blank but also moving, none of their shells hit each other.

The rest entirely depends on the tank. You want moving accuracy on brawlers, accuracy on anything that isn't a pure brawler, and aim time on both unless you're a brawler and already have really good moving acc. There's also to take in consideration that shots fired when the cannon isn't completely stabilized consistently puts the shells at the border of the dispersion circle.

I suggest playing it exclusively until you are finished with it. I find that playing good tanks like the germans or the soviets makes playing that tank even harder because you will have higher expectations. It also plays completely different than those, as its a slow piece of crap yet has no armor. So it drives like the T-64 and has to hide like the Leopard. Thankfully the gun has high alpha damage so you can maximize your hiding.

That is too general. Retrofits should be fitted based on a vehicles strengths. For scouts, view range and acceleration is pretty much mandatory.
For TDs, it's the same at least as far as t5.
For LTs, you want to not play them at all.
For MBTs, max out firepower as much as possible, doesn't really matter what you get after that apart from more HP.
SPGs just need firepower. Literally nothing else matters to them apart from maybe acceleration which you can't get because you need to use that universal slot for firepower.
