So, i just finished Danganronpa 1 and wasn't that impressed.
My main problems with it were mostly the handholding, as the game forced hints on you on every opportunity. You couldn't listen to a single discussion without a hint at the end of it and often you were forced to listen through the entire discussion to contradict something anyways.
The hope vs despair theme was also very heavy handed and mentioned at every opportunity. Can't say i felt much forJunkoeither, considering she didn't even have a fixed personality.
I didn't hate the game, but I'm not sure I'm interested enough to play the sequels. Do they improve on the first game? How tight are they linked to it storywise? Is there just as muc handholding? Do you ever find out more about how "the tragedy" was caused?

If you like the concept and execution of the first game, you will most likely find the 2nd game to be a improvement but still "more of the same".
Gameplay isn't what makes Danganronpa special, so hand-holding shouldn't have been a complaint, and even then it's more so the first case than anything.
While some argue the environment / atmosphere in the first game is better, everything else is improved upon in Danganronpa 2.
Cases are harder and more interesting, characters are more varied, and the story is better too.
DR2 is basically a sequel that takes place with a reasonable time after the first, there's no confirmed time span.
AE takes place between the 1st and 2nd game, however should be played last as it has story spoilers. It's also a 3rd person shooter which is hit or miss to some fansAlthough I loved it, but not as much as the main series games
Also, you do find out how the tragedy is caused in the later entries.
Personally I don't see why you shouldn't give Danganronpa 2 a chance if you did enjoy the story / characters / concept.

I meant the eyes, anime Chihiro and Komaeda were the only people to die with open eyes, meaning they knew something that was hidden.

Now that you mentioned, i think up this, what if Chihiro's AE take over Nagito, and made all that ruse cruise because he had insider knowledge that they were trapped in a simulation, so they wouldn die in the first place.
And he tried to take down the Ultimate Despair so forcing Monokuma to release Chiaki into the real world, leaving Monokuma alone in the VR, no graduation or repeating the year, you are stuck, until Naegi and other could fix the machine from inside and re-start the simulation.

Assuming the wikia is not wrong, Chihiro made Chiaki and Usami before the tragedy, Chiaki probably served as a interactive NPC for the Neo World Program, Assisting Izuru into becoming the Ultimate Hope, because remember, Chihiro had a hand into Izuru's creation, the most important one, i suppose.
Chihiro mentions a NDA on the first game, Towa group made the Monokuma, so i can accept that Monaca made a reskin on Usami, making into Monokuma, unto Junko's image.
Ae was made in the tragedy.
AE's remains, after being found by FF, altered Chiaki and Usami into NPCs for whitewashing the UDespairs.
Back onto the first game, Junko could have made a Liquid Ego for despair, just to fuck with them from the grave.

*Usami is either the first, or was made before Izuru, the NWProgram can make and alter memories, under DG2 context, we can assume that while Chihiro was alive, the NWP's purpose was to remold Hajime into Izuru, which makes Izuru a artificial personality, programmed by Chihiro, who was smart enough to code Chiaki into existence.
