What monsters are you comfortable with? I use Zinogre for everything, personally, because I've fought hundreds of them, and I feel like they're a good mix of slow and fast attacks. Even if a monster's "good" for practicing against, however, it might not be good for you to practice against, if you're not familiar with them.
My suggestions, if you have nothing else, would be the Raths, Zinogre, and maybe Brachy.

With freeform combos, moves with hitboxes that tend to the side or very high or very low, which of two moves each button produces depending on the move you used last and your recitals and encores having several options based on where you are in a combo and what direction you're holding each with different lengths, repositioning and number of hits, and stringing all of this together to juggle several buffs to keep up, HH's moveset is far more complex than most weapons', and that's before considering things like motion, exhaust and KO values. Meanwhile you don't even need to memorise songs, just keep them written down off to the side and glance at them while you're locked in an animation. After playing each a few times they should be ingrained in your memory anyway.

A weapon doesn't have to be complicated or have a steep learning curve to be good. The HBG is incredibly simple, and that's precisely one of the reason why it IS so effective.
I suppose you could make an argument regarding weakpoints, but that applies to every weapon at some point, so it's not really a point just in HBG's favor.

But it's not. It's the ranged equivalent of, "Hit the Monster, Don't Get Hit". Just like GS, once you know the fight, you can HBG it. Like I said, there's four buttons to memorize.
For contrast, throw someone with absolutely ZERO experience into a Diablos fight, arguably the easiest monster to use CB against, and see how well they do. Without a proper knowledge of guard points, shield charging, and what moves do what when you press what button, they're gonna cart quicker than you can imagine. Give them an HBG, and they'll do far, far better almost every time.

As someone that doesn't use either weapon often, I find CB way easier than HBG. Not that guy, just a third party chiming in. CB is fucking effortless to use, you don't even have to worry about positioning. In fact I'd go so far as to say that if you dumped someone who knew nothing about the weapon into a diablos fight their biggest mistakes would be trying to worry about positioning and not knowing they can guardpoint. If you gave each a five minute rundown of what each weapon is capable of and what each button does beforehand I'm pretty sure the CB would perform much better than the HBG.

Okay, but that doesn't actually translate into how much skill it takes to pick up each weapon and to get competent with it. HBG is SIMPLE, but it is also HARDER and has a steeper learning curve. CB has a higher barrier of entry, but that's not really a big deal; No weapon has a barrier of entry that should take more than five minutes to overcome. The biggest part of CB's barrier of entry is knowing to charge your phials so you don't bounce. You don't need its whole moveset in detail to learn how to use it, you just need to know how to charge your shit, what guardpoints are and how to do the AED.

My opinion, CB is much more complicated than HBG.
What's difficult about playing HBG (solo) is finding proper windows to reload/sheathe and the fragility of your hunter.
In a group HBG is significantly easier on you since you have 3 meat shields running about tripping the monster.
Please note that while HBG is simple at its core, some of the lesser known mechanics are still very important, like what ammos cause higher recoil and critical distance.

Anyway I like Kushala for glaive. Looks nice, and since it doesn't have a shield and does have long animation locks that mean canceling as soon as you can and then having a longer evasion window is often helpful if not crucial, the evasion skills help even more than on most weapons.

It's just Guard+2/Awaken/Razor Sharp/Crit+2. Not great but it still outdamages the other craftable para lances most of the time even without Ch+2/HB. My original plan was to have Ruthlessness instead of Crit Eye for the negative affinity negation but the chucklefucks at Capcom decided only gunners should get Ruthlessness relics.
