It is my headcanon that the original humans who sealed away the monsters were native americans living in the rocky mountain region of North America.
The human in the first screen of the intro looks like it is wearing native attire, and most of the humans in the intro carry spears, aside from one who is using a sword.
It would also make sense timeline wise, as the monsters were probably sealed away before colonists showed up, given that Asgore and Toriel are probably 500 something years old.
Frisk is most likely a descendant of them.

I like Flowey, so I've been badgering him anytime I could in my playthrough (pacifist run). When I went to badger him in the end sequence, after not following his advice, he correctly guessed that I wanted to be friends.
Then went on a long tirade about how pathetic I was and how he'll never be my friend.
It's been hours and I'm STILL upset, he really really knows how to hit where it hurts. I ended up killing Asgore just so to show him I wasn't as predictable as he seemed to think, and he reacted by trying to goad me into a genocide run.

Its more of a meta punishment.
Some people cant handle having their save file tainted forever unless they force themselves to tamper with the integrity of the game.
Knowing that the all subsequent runs are pointless because of the taint (Chara takes over and kills everyone after you leave the timeline/other ominous implications), basicaly making their game "worthless" to them. Its pretty harsh for some people.
I think its fine as it is for the purposes of the game and what its trying to achieve.
Though it woud be neat if there was more permament changes and a way to "remove the taint/atone for your sins/get your soul back" through a very difficult alternate route. Maybe in an expansion pack or something.
But I think the game can stand on its own as is (except for hard mode)
