we have this thread every day.
all 'git gud' aside, i just beat him, so ill give you some tips.
the mounts' attacks are easy to read but sometimes the wind up is tricky. play safe till your are confident in his next move.
the mount will do an attack where it jumps straight up and spews fire below. a good practice to avoid this is to run the fuck away when it jumps straight into the air.
the mount takes tons of damage from hitting the chest, neck, and head. hitting the mount there will get you in the second phase faster.
the second phase was pretty easy to read for me. typically three hit combos and electric splash attacks. if you time rolls well, you can avoid a ton of damage.
if you found that lightning resist ring, put that shit on, it does wonders.
i found that NOT locking onto him in the first phase was easier. this may not be for everyone
Go back in time and kill his dad.

I think Ancient Dragon is just one of those fights most peopleincluding megive up on early on because every attack is a one-hit KO. Nameless King is not as bullshit.
There's a ring that recovers HP from critical attacks. Equip that, as you get two free ones during the fight, one on the beast and one on the king.
Other than that, just roll and try to anticipate

Btw, in phase one, the dragon only does that shitty fire aoe from above if you get too far under its stomach.
If you stay in front of the dragon, it won't do it and you can better read the next attack anyway.

Tried all sorts of gear to offset damage in the long haul. Pushing 70% weight and all that noise. Didn't work. Died about 30 times.
Ultimately, I took everything off, put on Flynn's, Cloranthy, Carthus blood/milk, and Astora''s GS. Nigga never touched me once. Go figure.
He's easy to keep a range on so he turned out to be one of the few bosses where being a caster/sorc paid off.
I then helped people kill him about fifty times.I was bored.
