What's your excuse for not playing Dwarf Fortress right now?

>>
I only just got into this game.

I can't tell if my fucking dwarves are doing what they're told. They just run back and forth, eat then sleep.

Pisses me the fuck off when they eat the last of the mushrooms. And the migrants are worse, they just fucking sit there not putting their vital skills to good use. They don't even help carry shit back to the storages.

Then the fucking goblos decide to overrun the shit hole (literally just build my fort under the dirt) so I have to end it in a blaze of glory by using my last miner dwarf to open up a wall to an aquifer and drown everything.

Great game nonetheless.
>>
I can't get into it no matter how much I try

The 2 major updates you missed focused mostly on adventure mode shenanigans.

First gave adv mode world activation (shit actually happens in the world while you play) and the dialog overhaul.

The other update, released a few days ago, adds the ability to actually cut down trees and build shit in adv mode.

If you dont care about adv mode, then you haven't missed too much. Just minor changes and updates to fort mode.

Are you at the latest version? You can find welders or acetylene torches in garages or public works buildings.
I fucking love that game. Shits fun as hell when you first start out, but I tend to get bored once I become an invincible machete murder god with an RV and run out of interesting things to do.

I downloaded the launcher and I'm playing an experimental build 3 or 4 days old. I've been though a few garages but no welders yet, so I've had to get by with duct tape.

This is the first time I've actually sat down and tried to learn the game, only been going at it for a couple days, but it's loads of fun.

I've never survived to the first goblin raid, I usually get bogged down by how many fucking dorfs show up/are born and sort of lose interest because I have to spend most of my time building more accommodations for them and bossing them around. But I was never good at the game to begin with.
>>
>>337537802
Public works tend to spawn just outside the edges of towns if you don't manage to find a garage with either a welder or an acetylene torch.
You could also craft a makeshift welder too, if you have really shitty luck. They take up more batteries then a regular welder, but if you can find an electronics store batteries won't be much of an issue.
>>
>>337538396
That was the hardest part of learning dwarf fort for me. The first couple migrant waves were fine, 3 or 4 extra dwarves each, great. Then the 3rd wave would come and its 25 dwarves, I would get overwhelmed and just stop playing.

It gets easier. Set a couple migrants to make rock crafts, set some up as masons making pots and doors on repeat, and a ton of the dwarves will just keep themselves busy hauling rocks. It's fine to have the dwarves live in a communal room until you have enough bedrooms.

There are two ways of knowing if your dwarves are being useful. If you want to know whether they're pulling their weight right at that instant, check the "idlers" button in the top of the screen, which tells you how many units are currently unoccupied. If you want to know what jobs are being done/not done, check the Jobs screen.

The most basic way of dealing with gobbos is

1) build a fortress in a place with rocks

2) dig your fortress into the rock (d>d>click the rock you want dug)

3) build a mechanic's workshop and give one of your dwarves the mechanic job (press b>w>t and place)

4) give the mechanic some time to operate, he will use the rocks you dug out of the mountain to build Mechanisms

5) after a while has passed, (b>T>s) to place a bunch of stonefall traps anywhere where you think the goblins will pass through, preferably at your cave entrance. Your dwarves will load the traps with stones, and if a goblin passes through a stonefall trap they'll take considerable damage

spam a bunch of those and you should be pretty safe from low level sieges without even needing a military

Because every time I run a fort, the time and energy gets distributed by:

80% trying to optimize the fort, making plans, designing blueprints, and micro-managing Dorf roles,

15% trying to experiment and find out just what the fuck thing X, Y, and Z are for and whether it's actually useful or not, and

5% of actually running the fort.

And just when I make some progress, a new update comes out or my fort gets assraped by some unforeseen variable that I didn't or couldn't account for, and I DO. NOT. HAVE. TIME. to deal with that shit right now.

Pic related, a visual example of how things usually go.

When the first floor I see is a skull emblazoned on the ground, I know we have different goals.

I'm just trying to make fortresses with very little mined space so my processor doesn't cry so much, and I like to keep them on one floor so I can always see all the inhabitants and invaders. The pretty shapes are just a side effect of me trying to cram all this stuff together.

not true, unless you're a trapspammer (df's version of easy mode), you embarked in a world/island with low savagery and low civilization count, or you're trying to keep your wealth low, there is a hell of a lot of difficulty to be found

if you want challenge as a competent player try embarking in a "terrifying evil" biome, or a desert, or an aquifer, or a frozen tundra, or dig deeper

then tell me "all the challenge has disappeared" when your dwarves are dying from strangulation caused by indestructible undead llama hair
>>
>>337549118
Yeah getting started in those biomes can be rough, but after that you'd have to intentionally skip safety measures to get into situations like that.
>>
How difficult is it to organise a military now? The last time I played was maybe 5 years ago.
>>
>>337549118
been there, done those

either you get wiped out by undead at the start or you manage to get underground and it's mostly normal from there on out.

stuff reanimating when you butcher it is a hassle, so you have to throw animals down a pit or atom smash them, and mostly survive on veg and fish, but it's certainly something you can deal with

I find aquifers more helpful than annoying, to be honest

an above-ground fort in one of those environments might be difficult, but i found the main problem with above-ground stuff was just how much material you need to build even small stuff
>>
>>337550446
Material is less of a problem if you have some dwarves making wood or stone blocks nonstop. They're way lighter than raw materials and three times as efficient, if I remember right. Also worth more money.
>>
>Play fortress mode
>Nothing interesting ever happens
>Play adventure mode
>Always start in what seems to be a gigantic maze of a fortress or underground cavern
>>
>>337532374
Fort mode has work orders and dwarfs now have personalities that actually affects their happiness.

Adventure mode lets you build houses and get fps raped by the world being alive.
>>
>>337551374
back when I played, it was one wood plank per log, and I felt digging down to use stone would defeat the purpose of being above-ground

clay and glass are effectively infinite if you have them, but unless you fancy a house made of raw clay, you're still gonna need 1 wood for each brick that you produce

I did enjoy kobold camp, though
>>
>>337551649
>and dwarfs now have personalities that actually affects their happiness.

>>
>>337551731

>>

I just see no depth to this game. Its hard to learn because UI is ass, but there's just not much to do. You built a fort and organise basic needs, then monsters start rushing you in waves. Thats it, thats the game. There's no diplomacy, science, combat, political intrigue, economy, colonization - you know, the things that make strategy games complex and interesting. You build a fort and then fuck around with levers and physics, about as fun as 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 sandbox games out there

Alright, why is that? Because its parts allow the players to access a very wide variety of strategies to combat each other, to the point where the perfect strategy still hasn't been "solved" even with extremely powerful computers.

Dwarf Fortress is similar; you just need a fucking imagination. There are huge amount of things you can do with the tools provided. Saying DF is without depth smacks of a guy who wants shit handed to him on a platter, and that's not the audience this game is looking for.

Chess is deep on a competitive based level. DF is a single player game so your comparison is lacking considering a SP game would have the complexities of its mechanics judged along with the learning curve to obtain a measurement for a virtual quantity like depth. Though we should stop getting derailed.
