GTA has always been one of those games you pick up sometimes just to drive around and it's fun as fuck.
Speed really isn't a problem, coming from someone who recently finished the game. All have varying speeds and the faster ones are pretty fast.

Michael is boring and unlikable. Trevor is even more unlikable but only scores credit among the loledgy crowd for being a sociopath. Franklin isn't even a character at all, just a bland cliche black criminal stereotype there to occasionally comment on the other two.
If you play v then iv back to back you'll realise how much of a fucking disgrace iv really is. The driving really is awful it's not realistic it's just demented. Literally boat controls.
and even the on foot stuff is fucking horrendous compared to v. It's just trash and I actually enjoyed it when it came out
Niko is fucking demigod tier. The Yugoslava war is easily one of the most horrific and unfortunately half forgotten conflicts in modern history, there was enough fucked up shit to make the nazis look alright in comparison. Takes a lot of balls and creativity from Rockstar to insert a veteran from such a horrible conflict as a protagonist. Anyone saw that god-tier documentary on the Dutch troops stationed in Srebrenica during the massacre? Just imagine being a UN peacekeeper who has no choice but to accept and guide people to the genocide of about eight thousand men and boys, knowing that it would be far worse off for the few surviving women who were segregated if they fought back.
IMHO, that fucked up past does bring out the best of Niko as a character, but despite all I still feel like Michael has the strongest characterization of the entire series. The fact that Leslie and the Houser bros chose to center their story around a depressed middle aged men shows how much the series has been maturing throughout the last decade, and presenting him as a person with genuine flaws, at least other than the expected blasé about killing from a GTA protagonist, works really well from a story perspective.
Also, his relation of "mentorship" with Franklin is great.

I actually fired IV back up recently and put the first person mod in it. I've never been a huge fan of IV's driving but it feels GREAT in first person. The car really feels like it has weight around you.
The mod could be a lot better but holy shit I'm having fun with it. It made it hard to go back to first person driving in V.
There's got to be a middle ground for the next game.Or the story dlc that MUST be coming by 2020 after they run out of shark cards. Fuckers.

I really liked Niko, his character development is great. Michael and Franklin were OK, but Trevor was just some /b/ lolsorandum retard. Tommy was a thug but he wasn't really fleshed out. I never finished 3 or SA.

I hated the characters in GTA V. All they did was bicker and complain with each other with the most uncreative banter ever.
I'm a writer. I know some characters are made so you can love to hate them. But Michael and Trevor were just annoying to listen to, to the point I started skipping cutscenes.
I've only regretted two purchases out of my 300+ games, and they were GTA V and Fallout 4.

Niko was good, but, the player behavior and the story the game tried to tell were so contrasted that it kept taking me out of it. You would go on rampages with Niko making fun of people dying left and right, then you start a mission and he's being all emo and shit. It was weird.
That's why I like V's story and character a lot more, it's more in line with player behavior. Trevor is the perfect free roam character.

I liked every single protagonist so far, including the psp gta games's toni and lance vance's brother. Never played any of the expansions though. Tommy is great and i have very fond memories of gta vc. But i really loved what they did in V too.
