You find that the Combine have a large force amassed there
You find out they are trying to open "a vault" that holds the technology for them to open a portal to their home world
You somehow figure out that the only way to enter the vault besides the main door is cleverly placed portal puzzles
One part of the game is based around finding the portal gun
The other bigger part is based around portal puzzles with the gun + the gravity gun
In the end, you get there too late, combine open the door just as you get inside
Final boss battle, idk vs. who, maybe establish that you can hurt those beanbag aliens with portals somehow
You win
You kill yourself together with the portal technology.

Valve stopped working on Episode 3 in 2009/2010 when they realized that hey have too much to tell and it wouldn't fit into an episode, they also decided to throw away episodic format in those years.
In the recent VR demo a HL3 and L4D3 files were discovered, both with source 2 engine (some old ones that but also some new ones), so no abandoning of franchise has taken place, sorry guys, maybe next time.

They ostensibly do not have a dev team because they do not make video games. If you believe they have a dev team employed, and they are biding their time, you are out of your mind.
The dev team is gone. There is no one to make the game. In the event that they ever make a game again, which they have no reason to, it will be done by a privately contracted outsider team who has no experience with the series.
Has it happened before? Yes, with other series. Has it ever been successful? On a single occasion. STALKER has been made by an entirely different team every time, and they completely failed on 1/3 times.

Damn right it's a shitty copy. SS1 was trying to be the least user friendly fps ever and pretty much succeeded with its atrocious control and clunky interface. It's no big task for a bunch of flight sim developers. When HL1 came around and tried to copy it, it failed spectacularly and introduced the most seamless, immersive and intuitively controlling fps ever to the gaming industry.
Looking Glass Studios really was remarkable, because Valve was so far behind that they couldn't even fail as proficiently as LGS did.
