How did they get away with releasing such a mediocre, broken game?
I get the fact that hype obviously played into it, but shouldn't it have been completely slated when it came out?

It's not garbage, it's just... Fallout 3 again, just a bit better in some gameplay aspects, and worse in RPG aspects.
And Fallout 3 is not an impressive game to release in 2015.
You can see stuff like settlement building could have been GREAT if it had been refined and given a clear goal and direction. Instead it just feels like a beta feature... in a fully released AAA game.
The world is hard to explore, disorientating and not well designed. The NPC AI is still shit. All NPC towns feel like theme parks and don't do a good job convincing you people actually live there.
What else did I miss except the obvious stuff about writings and complete lack of RPG mechanics?

The poor optimization is probably the worst aspect of the game. Dual GPU setups don't provide much of a benefit at all and maintaining a steady 60 FPS seems to be nearly impossible.

They have no incentive to change so why should they? They can crack out a new big buggy world every four years with less care each time and people will suck their cock for it.
It's not NV. Then again NV was the best fallout game because it used ideas from the old dev team that didn't have to time to put in F2.
