Dwarf Fortress is a game that has actual complexity. Rimworld is not. To get any decent level of challenge out of that crap heap, you have to mod it to oblivion.

It manages to look better than Dwarf Fortress, but cuts out 95% of the depth and interesting things about it.

The art style is quite literally the one in favor over at Reddit. The game is casualised, as they like it there. The game is pushed mainly by youtube letsplayers who, surprise surprise, cater mainly to reddit.

I like it, it fits the Firefly western vibe.
Some mods make it harder by putting coolers in research, making early heat waves quite deadly.

I wish I could play max size jungle though, without all the wildlife and plants causing stuttering. I want to land in the middle of a flat area, tame monkeys and with their help terraform this virgin forest into an industrial colony.

immunity is built based on the following factors: bed rest; medicine quality ; doctor skill (the treatment itself provides a boost when successful but still applies medicine quality when failed) and I think nutrition mood and tiredness have some effect too

without medicine it'll almost always kill you
with herbal medicine you need a good doctor or full time bedrest
with regular medicine you can sometimes get away with letting them work normally
with glitterworld medicine you should build immunity fast enough to have them do everything they normally do

For things like parasites and sensory mechanites it takes like... 10 successful treatments to go away
This is not something that happens quickly. Your doctors will inevitably fuck it up enough times it may as well be a permanent affliction

I'm enjoying the game a lot. Have a small colony of 6 working well, that is until I introduced hops and brewing...

Now my herbalist gardener goes on drinking binges every night, strips naked, and tries to wander off and needs to get dragged to bed. I have plenty of food, working freezer now, getting production going and gonna finally smelt down slag chunks. That is if I can keep my addicts in line.

Loving the game so far, but amazed that there's so little discussion of a game that allows for a lot of creativity and emergent gameplay. The Dev admits he's inspired by DF and used Prison Architects art with their blessing, so bitching about that is just.... well I dunno, I guess you're an inconsolable douche then.

Eh, I doubt that will be a complete turn off since a big part of this game is just trying to survive the unpredictable.

I've started and lost probably 4 colonies so far just from losing to shit I didn't anticipate. I'm enjoying more of the journey than the end result in this game. I have no expectations of "winning" or any shit like that. It's kinda like those Buddhist sand paintings they spend lots of time doing meticulous work only to wipe it away in a few seconds. Reminds you to enjoy the impermanence of life.

How do I incapacitate people so I can capture them? I found 4 cryo chambers in the first day and out popped 4 people with heavy weaponry, 3 of them are non-violent while I just swarm the 4th guy with melee fists.

I've beat them down several times now with just my fists and each time they just end up dead.

Recommend starting with a team with one person able to do construction, one with growing, and one with research for the basic essentials.

I'd say build early buildings with wood since it's more plentiful and grows back. Save your steel for more advanced stuff a bit later, such as power. Mining will likely yield more steel, but not super fast. I felt mining takes longer for rooms, but you reduce fire risk.

I'd experiment with settlement lay out, but keep in mind raids and shit come from all directions of the map, so keep that in mind.

I like both DF and RW. No need for this autism guys, just stop.

Fact is DF is so complex and good and fun that whenever I sit down and play something that copies it, like RW, it just reminds me how little they copy the complexity.

For example the biggest down falls for Rimworld is it's just one flat Z level. One Z level. You can't dig down at all or build up. Your entire colony is entirely 2D while Dwarf Fortress is fully 3D with hundreds of layers of stone and having fortresses with 100 dwarves is like a standard session.

I like both, but I wish RimWorld had more complexity and things to do. It's too easy to reach the stage where your colony is unkillable and thriving and nothing is exciting anymore. Not to mention no hands or legs is just silly.

I just picked the game up again though. It has been more than a year since I played it last. I did one play session yesterday and noticed a few new things like taming animals and training them, but other than that they have added very little to the game from the looks of it.

Even DF has bigger yearly updates than RW, like what is their excuse? There are no seasons in RW either. No harsh winters or anything.

It's a mechanical worm. It literally kills people in single hits and takes a billion hits to kill. If you don't own some EMP grenades or advanced weapons, expect death. You can take it out with some weak SMG fire from cover, but you need insane luck. Bows do nothing to it. Melee does nothing to it. EMP grenades rape it.

All worms have charge lasers that are basically like long range snipers.

I opened the caskets
the guys inside did all the fighting for me
the mechanoid had an inferno cannon
the hostile Cat who did all the killing survived being beat about the head with a club and got put into a cyrosleep casket so I can recruit her later

I got a sweet ass assault rifle; a pistol; 100 gold a psychic shock lance animal pulser and sooth pulser as well as 4 caskets

I had a save before opening the wall I could've used to just leave it for later; I'm glad I opened it now.

Dorf Fort is a meme game. All you do is make a wall around your fort entrance plus a drawbridge over a pit, a winding path filled with traps, and some hammerdwarves and you're ready for just about anything. For your economy, just spam mugs and toys and you can buy ANYTHING from the caravan. Farming is dead simple and metal working is basically just a bit of micromanagement. The only challenge to the game is if you make it challenging forcefully with your embark location. The game is ridden with bugs and eventually you will lose due to FPS death. The amount of FEATURES in the game aren't really that much. It's more like detail bloat that doesn't add up to much except more FPS death. Considering this game has been in development for nearly a decade, the amount of progress made is pretty low. You could sit nearly any competent programmer down for a decade and he'll probably have something much better than DF. Think of the hundreds of games that have come out in the decade, some of them being made by small teams or one person.

DF lacks direction and suffers from bugs, FPS death, and needless bloat that aren't actual features. Rimworld might be neat in a few years as a game with actual direction and concrete gameplay.

Create a 1-2 tile sized stockpile zone and disable everything but Kibble in the stocking list and set priority to high.

Luckily they only eat like 5 bits of kibble each, they're pretty easy to maintain.
