Their biggest audience, the otaku, don't need/want it, they're satisfied with cute girls and tits, and with that, trying out something else is more than often nothing more than an unnecessary risk. That doesn't mean, however, that none of today's stuff is good, that's complete bullshit. The majority of anime is shit, as is the majority of movies and literature.
