I haven't played the PSX version, but yeah, there's quite a bit of changes. It's been rebalanced, the first dungeon is gone, some old skills are gone I think, and I believe some new ones exist. The hybrid skill system is gone, certain low level skills transfer to new jobs, but high levels ones don't. From what I've heard about the PSX version, the jobs level up faster. I was able to master several classes by the end of the game without grinding. There's a radar for lithograph pieces and a lot of other things.

I don't know about removed areas aside from the first dungeon. I do know that certain times you'd have to travel to a location manually in the PSX version, they just take you there in a cutscene in the 3DS version, so that cuts down on time a bit. On Japanese websites I've read that you can finish the game in 50-60 hours, though that still seems a bit fast for a game like this. Took me 138, but then it was my first time playing, I took my time, I talked to people, I did side content (but not all of it) etc. I don't think there were "a lot of" areas removed though.

Oh yeah, knew I was forgetting something. Yeah, you can choose when you want to distribute skill points. The HP/MP restore is really nice early game (or really shitty, depending on how you look at it). Doesn't matter so much later on, but it's nice when grinding on metal monsters since it basically eliminates the need to take a break and go to an inn.

I think most are fine. “Shrine of Mysteries” is a more accurate translation anyway, I always thought that Engow was supposed to be a mash up of Ember and Glow (romanizes as Engow), so Emberdale is fine. I don’t know where “Sim Town” comes from, I’m guessing the original localization? It’s just “Immigrant Town” in the Japanese versions. Yeah, most of those changes seem fine, though not all of them.

This, probably. I haven't been doing it as long as most video game localizers, but translation can get boring at times, especially if it's just a job and you're not doing it because you personally enjoy it. I have the most fun when I can get a bit creative. I don't do the sorts of stuff NoA or Plus Alpha or others do, no, I don't change the intent of dialogue, but I mean, it's just fun when I have something that I have to get creative to translate well. Still don't condone localizers just changing things for kicks though. Only time I've ever changed a name is when I felt I had to to preserve the author's intent.

I honestly don't care. DQ4 was really the only localization that I felt was bad. DQ5 onward while had some iffy stuff was never at a point that annoyed me. And DQ7 is my favorite DQ game and happy I can play a much better version of that. And can't wait to play DQ8 as well.
As for stuff like Builders I am waiting for the Neo so normal PS4 reduce price so I can buy that to play PS4 games I happen to miss out on.

This is the second time I've heard this. What are you guys even talking about? You have a party of Hero, Maribel, and Keifer for a long time, and then Gabo is added. You lose a member for a bit, get a new one and that's your party for a good deal of the game before one swaps quite a bit later on, and her level is averaged I think, though I'm not sure about that. After that you stick with those characters until near the end of the game where you can swap anyone but the Hero with the one that left. I mean, it's only a few swaps in a 100+ hour game, it's nowhere near constant. Look at FF II or IV for an example where party members actually change often.
