if you aren't spamming them to counter enemy trash units, you are an actual moron. one of the worst special units in the game, only used in games below 1600 rating or in same expert-level-meta-bullshit, and even there not in masses

aoe2 is one of the games with the biggest amount of shit advice on /v/

Fast castle is easy just use the build order.
Rushing is easy too.
Aggression is a key part of AoE2 though so if you can't get the hang of that then you'll most likely lose against higher rated players.

Shame really, it's a pretty cool game when you're just building shit.

The lag has always been bad on HD, there's not been a patch in forever doubt it will get fixed but who knows. It's never been that bad for me though, depends on who you're playing I guess. Played a dude in America and it was fine (from the UK) but playing against Argentina/Spain was shit.

>>345446589

Kek, yeah the elite elephants are annoying. Best counter is usually monks imo. Overall I'd say Gengis Khan was one of the easier campaigns.

What a load of shit.

I have never been so bored out of my mind in this game. Every map is shit. Even the last map is piss easy with mass monk spam and having 40 War Elephants to steamroll everything in your way.

2 - Saladin
3 - Attila, The Hun
4 - El Cid
5 - Joan O' Arc
6 - Montezuma
7 - William Wallace
8 - Barbarossa

Wall maze is necessary in almost every Hard difficulty campaign. ESPECIALLY in Conquerors campaigns.

El Cid and Montezuma are fucking hard without Wall Maze + Castle defense

In Forgotten Empires, it's mandatory. Try play King Alric or Dracula without wall maze.

there are trash units that cost only food and wood like skirmishers and halberdiers, use them yourself en masse and don't lose many of your expensive gold units while fighting trash

build your bases from the start in a way that helps you defend (early on houses and other buildings can act as walls), palisades in early game are your friend

don't turtle like a faggot though

adapt to what your enemy is doing but don't steer too far away from your civ's attributes and bonuses (and also use those bonuses to your advantage)

in most civs, castle units are kewl but often too expensive to rely on completely (castles are expensive too and you can make those units only in castles [except for some new civs but i dont remember which])

place castles (more often) or towers (occassionally, or in early game, or if a civ has nice tower bonuses) near forward gold mines and generally to protect your route to the enemy base

once trebuchets are out, your castles are very vulnerable, so be ready to counter attack

onagers can wipe armies, rams can catch your enemy off guard and are good against walls and turtlers

don't build scorpions

pick a civ according to the type of map

>All these peasants thinking AoE 2 Campaign on hardest difficulty is hard.
Most of the time they end up being tedious when they are hard you defend and grind away at their base little by little. The first AoE to this day still has the hardest missions in all AoE games imo. This one especially, you need to do tricks to win the damn thing.

mamelukes are expensive, require castle to produce, have very short range for a ranged unit and generally I never really used them

The Dutch & Flemish are Franks (And a few Frankified Frisians, Saxons and Celts), but not French. Same for the Franconians in Germany.

Sweet, I did this back in the day, no biggie.

i didnt bother completing it, second level of that campaign you are up against like 6 players or more on a large map with no gold and just the lag was enough to make me quit after a little while
bad optimization like some of the other maps

i definetly recommend you try the WE WUZ KANGS expansion, the campaigns were better and the new civilizations are actualy balanced

I am currently playing the African campaigns.

Berbers:
Pretty alright. Good mix of adventure and build up. Not over-scripted as some Forgotten campaigns were.

Sundiata/Mali:
First time you see the "new" African environments and animals. Story has a zero to hero vibe. Last mission is quite hard if you are used to build up slowly.

Portugal:
Pretty good so far (4 out of 5 missions completed). You go around the world. The first mission has a game closing bug when you try to destroy the barricades after crossing the bridge, luckily you can go around it with transport ships.

Ethiopia:
Haven't played it yet.

In general, there is not as much scripting and less bugs. The campaigns feel more "natural" with your objectives and when they change.

During the summer sale I recommended getting the legacy bundle (AoE 2 + dlcs + AoE 3) for like 8 bucks, because AoE 3 alone costed around 6 bucks. Now it is probably too expensive.

So far, the AI is not that crazy. I remember the Hungarian Honfagalas scenario. The last part where you set over the river to Bohemia. It felt like landing in Normandy.
Or that "Two pillars" scenario in America where you have to attack over the bridges and my ally just did not move at all, so I had to do it all alone.

works everytime

Until two levels later where they rock up with 20 cavalry flanked by 2 catapults and by the time your towers are done chewing through them, another group + more is arriving.
>>

Spain was the "first" that took advantage of the technology.

Spain was at constant war against Moors, French and Portuguese so they invented new ways to fight wars.

The Chinese invented it but Europeans mastered it.

>4 vs 4

>dark forest
>turtling, building up
>all is pretty even
>suddenly one of my bots dies
>3 vs 4
>then their armies of doom go on to the next one
>send some monks in a black op to retrieve his relic

>be outnumbered 10 to 1
>last bot dies
>1 vs 4
>what do
>go innawoods
>build walls
>build wonder
>wait to win
>haha, you cannot get me, I am behind 7 Trump walls
>suddenly countdown
>my wonder is finished building 10 seconds later
>oh shit nigger, my relics!
>300 years until you win through wonder
>288 years until they win through relics
>...
>have to trade my last resources to get a market, castle and siege workshop
>build onagers to carve a way through the woods to where the nearest monastery with a relic is
>try to hit it with a trebuchet
>too far
>shit
>build trash stack
>onager kills the last trees
>Uraaa!
>goes amazingly well
>monastery down, trebuchet lost
>objective achieved
>150 years until wonder victory
>but now there is an undefended path to my innawoods location
>palisades
>more trash
>shark bots come to realize there is a path of less resistance
