One of the great things about Initial D, season 1 at least, is that all of the characters are written quite well. They feel alive, like they could be a real person, and the actions they've taken are something that a person would actually do.
Iketani fucked up, repeatedly, and he reaped the rewards from those fuck ups. Sometimes people fuck up though, that's just life. He still had friends, a job, and passion for his hobby. Life goes on.

It's actually sad that the only time main characters (or the most prominent ones) are only allowed to have personalities in TV shows and literature. Video games and anime are so stupid because why can't writers understand that if your lead isn't interesting or at least have SOME personality, no one is going to give a fuck about them no matter how many quirky side characters you put in (especially since your shoving the perspective on the lead)? There is more than one way to make and enjoy media, anon. There's no reason that the most interesting character necessarily needs to be the "main" one, especially if the main character is the lens through which you observe the works' world.

A game developer or any fag from /v/ will tell you that story isn't the most important thing in a game. Because of that, in many games, story is sacrificed for gameplay, and so you get a generic main character. Most video game characters are self inserts, because you're the one playing them.
I can't think of a single RPG where this isn't the case.
In Japanese games usually the protagonist has all the personality of a dish rag and in Western ones they just go for the self insert shit which means the main character isn't even really a set character.

stage 3 is done as a film, and it has some merit since the art and color are a lot better than 2, but that's really the point of no return as far as interesting characters or narrative goes

It's pretty stunning just how much initial D squandered its supporting cast. the ova was more interesting than pretty much any project D stuff just because you had returning characters and a focus on character instead of races for the sake of races.
