When he was making good music, it was popular to hate him. Because he was both highly competent, while also being popular. He elevated his genre of music, while also being incredibly arrogant about it.
But then when he started getting all artsyfartsy, he lost his mainstream audience. The quality of his music fell, but now that he's no longer the best in his field, it's safe for /mu/ to like him now. A "If you don't like his music you just don't get it" mentality took over.
