Canon or not Snake's Revenge is technically the first sequel to the first game making it technically the second game in the series. Also do remember Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake wouldn't exit if Snake's Revenge wouldn't exist as it gave Kojima the inspiration to make the "real" sequel to the first game.

There is actually more to this mess which kinda makes SMB2 being the second game in the series correct and incorrect at the same time: Doki Doki Panic was originally developed as a sequel to the first Super Mario Bros. but then Nintendo decided to use the mascots of whatever event the Doki Doki characters were used for at the time instead of Mario ones which turned the game from being Super Mario Bros. 2 to Doki Doki Panic.
Super Mario Bros 2 isn't even that bad. It's still one of the most competent platformers on NES and holds up well. I like it a lot more than Mario 1.

And Miyamoto actually worked on Doki Doki Panic, compared to the real SMB 2. Also, SMB2 USA sold 10 million copies and is the fourth most selling NES game of all time.

Also because at the time it was made, was regarded as an improvement over the original game. Something fans forget is that, most critics stopped caring about classic MM after 3 because they kept seeing the games as the same old same old without any real changes. Hence why they praise 2 and 3 the most.
Considering the chances of a series going significantly over 2 entries, and that you're accepting both values of best and worst, I don't think it's a significant statement to make.

I would but I can't think of any examples. Second game is always best game. First game is the most classic. Second game is when you get it right. Third game is where you try to top the second for the sake of topping it but come up short. The best you can do with a third installment is make it a warm hearted send off to the series and it's characters. Hang yourself if you want to go past three games in a series.
