The setting/theme is what ruins it for me. On mechanics it's an even simpler Persona game, without social links and the same boring dungeons (P3/4 tier, Persona5 is at least fixing that somewhat)
The game isn't bad, that's about it. Shitty setting aside (censored beyond belief on some aspects) it's just a typical Jrpg, which there are plenty of out there.
SO5 is the cheesefest of Jrpgs, I enjoyed my time with SO4 because of the awkward motion cap cutscenes with animu doll faces and the combat is somewhat fun. It's not a cult classic but at least it reaches the "so bad it's good" level on enjoyment, while #FE gives me nothing of that kind.

I think people rating Star Ocean 5 so low never actually played SO3. Only occasionally do I see someone say "If you liked previous games the same stuff's all here"
it's not really any worse than SO3, which was a fun game with a concept ahead of its time imo
and it couldn't possibly be worse than SO4.

Because I played it, I finished it, and it was nothing special at all. Not even any alternate endings or any way to influence the plot at all. The sequence in the town with Elie is purely for shock value and the whole ending "twist" is that it turns out joel was not actually justified, he was just a psychopath who made shit up to justify killing tons of people.
the combat was straight from uncharted, plus some stealth segments that always play out the same way.
it didn't present any concepts that hadn't been done to death in other zombie or survivor based media. the DLC for it was an agenda-pushing non-combat story section that makes Elie gay for no reason.

Star Ocean has always been a mediocre series though. Even 2, the one people often cite as the best in the series, isn't that great.
I'm not even trying to be a contrarian or anything. I enjoy the series as a whole and they have some neat ideas, but it's always been a second-rate series that you just kind of play when nothing better is out.

and it was right. SO5 is considerably better than 4 and only falls short of being just as good as 3 due to combat being casual-friendly and having no extra stuff to do on map exploration, like the disintegration ring and good puzzles.
SO2 had great music and huge towns, but it wasn't as good as 3 mechanics-wise, which also had amazing music too.
