IMO the only thing that makes or breaks it for me is the story. The gameplay is probably going to be excellent if it copies Chrono Trigger.

It's more just that part of reaching a new town that is enjoyable in rpgs I feel is the relief that you're safe/can heal up, etc.

in this game you gotta go sell shit then use items on everyone. it just feels like a pain compared to what it could have been, especially if gold is difficult to make (i don't know, haven't played)
>>
>>345313428
Allow me to summarize PC as a gaming platform in a single paragraph.

Nickel and dime developers and publishers as often as possible with the dignified tradition of steam sales, unironically support hardware manufactures who contribute nothing to the gaming industry, kill the very platforms that do and sustain healthy creative development, entire studios and quality control within their own ecosystems. Actively participate in destroying, downplaying and ignoring the enormous wealth said platforms have given the industry spanning several decades through a proven model of hardware stability and infrastructure. Continuously over-saturate the market with absolute shovelware that effectively reduces the quality of good quality games across every platform. Beg for and simultaneously demonize the practice of contracted games because manufactures who are actually invested in the industry are able to get shit done by funding and developing them. Demonize publishers who cater to console platforms because without them, they literally don't exist. Embody the most cancerous ideology possible and release it's destructive behaviors on the video game industry and consumers at large by brainwashing them and literally building a platform on the basis of being superior to other people through hardware superiority and wearing what is considered petty behavior being console wars as a fucking badge of honor.

Ask me again in 2 days.
I HOPE it'll be a good game, as it interests me and looks good. It looks like a really cold and somber game that is strong in the atmosphere department, complete with a beautiful all piano soundtrack.
But looks aren't the same thing as being good. I thought Type 0 HD would be amazing and wound up disappointed.

By the way, just a heads up: GMG has this game up for $10 cheaper than everyone else.

>>

>>
>>345314189
GreenManGaming lists where its keys come from, and it says its getting these keys directly from Square Enix. GreenManGaming is a legitimate seller. I'm not talking about G2A. G2A is the one that sells stolen keys
>>
>>345314207
yeah the only way to heal is by leveling up or by using items. also you can't run away from battles without a "smoke ball" item so you have to be super careful with resources. and enemies dont drop gold; you only make it by selling things.

It's like..I don't think these things ruin the game, but why? why just fuck with something so basic and integral to the medium in what's supposed to be a throwback? i can only imagine what the game would be like without this added, needless tedium.
>>
>>345314336
Why would Square sell GMG keys for 10 bucks for a new game? Sounds fishy.

>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZ2zxRB-vUA
This guy did a whole review on it. For a TL;DW thing:
Haste is overpowered and is mandatory about 40% into the game due to bosses getting multiple turns for your one turn.
The entire game is piano only.
The entire game is snow only.
The story is okay but is nothing special.
Despite acting like the game would be a spiritual successor to the Chrono series it doesn't really live up the hype people brought.
It's short.

It's still a fun game regardless, but it's short so paying full price isn't advised.

It is on the "entertainment market" side. Only way to expand the market is to generate wealth. When you spend money on a game you're not generating wealth. When you make a game you're not generating wealth. You're probably actively destroying wealth really, as the person who would've played that game might have done something productive during that time like solved a real world problem.

it's even shorter than Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana and Earthbound, those take at least 25 hours for the main story alone.
I can't think of a single good JRPG that doesn't take you at least a bit longer than just 20 hours and even than they all still have a lot of optional content.
Setsuna doesn't even have sidequests or NG+, it's more like a parody of classic JRPGs than anything.

I played SoSC. It's a 7/10 at best, probably 6/10. It's basically only the art. And that really is a card board cut out game, literally everyone is a card board cut out. Events with fade out just left for you to infer what happened, etc. No budget at all. If it wasn't for the art and monster design I never would've played it.

The PC version isn't out yet so we don't know if it has a good port or not, and I haven't heard any complaints about the PS4 version framerate wise.

Its worth mentioning that Square has done mostly solid PC ports lately though, with Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD and Lightning Returns both having the best ports they've done.

I'm getting it on PS4. I tend to go PS4 for things that I don't imagine will be modded heavily or don't benefit a ton from KBM, as my PC (i5 3570, HD 7850) isn't significantly more powerful and PS4 has remote play and the like.

Stuff like Fallout 4 and Overwatch I get on PC, JRPGs I'll get on PS4.

My issue with JRPGs today is that they lack any real narrative richness. Even ones that have good stories like LoH feel a little bland.

Also, all the dialogue is either meme central or slavishly literal to the point it reads like this:

>Rina, did you study hard today?
>Yep! I got all the books I needed from the librarian in town.
>This town sure does have a lot of great books! The library is huge, I nearly got lost walking around it!
>The librarian is scary though! The library is like a dungeon and he's the monster inside!
>Don't let him hear you say that. He's probably as angry as he looks.
>Kirin! I didn't know you were so judgemental! Is that the way to talk about people when they're not around?

It's fucking mind numbing. It's technically fine but god damn it makes me want to fall asleep.

On topic, I am Setsuna looks fine, but if it's lacking side quests and exploration I might give it a miss or wait for a sale. Having said that, some JRPGs have too much fucking busywork anyway.
>>
>>345322827
The problem with JRPGs is that they have barely evolved. Western RPG's almost completely
>>
>>345322827
The big problem with jRPG's as a whole is that they have difficulty showing any emotions besides extremes, that's why the dialogue has to make up for it but still ends being awkward as shit. Also explains why cut scenes are usually superior to in-game speech in terms of emotion
>>
>>345311223
You get a bonus track on PS4 too
>>
>>345323117
Even so it's much more welcoming the variety in JRPGs than WRPGS.
All major Western releases are basically a checklist of open world, pseudo/full action combat, very limited dialogue choices, a lot of fetch quest to do, it's all homogenized.
>>
>>345323776
Western RPG's the good ones actually have a decent choice and consequence systems. The one thing I like about JRPG's is the variety of scenarios but they always fuck it up with the terrible writing and the talent these days is no where near as good as the early 00's/90's
>>
>>345313678
>>345313428
It has little to do with the devs of the game being assholes and more to do with the fact that a higher cut needs to go to the respective company that developed the console than it does on PC since PC has no company that controls it and simply has digital distribution companies like Valve. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure console companies have the ability to set a minimum retail price for for brand new releases on their system and much tighter control over sales.

Why are the requirements so comparatively high? It looks like a high-res DS JRPG at best. `
>>
>>345307743
I was contemplating yesterday whether to buy it somewhat unsee for 40 bucks. Decided against it just because the current 50bucks PSN cards aren't cheap like they used to (GBP fag here)

Maybe I'll get it tomorrow though, I like the small trailer they have up on the PSN store
>>
>>345310669
But that's Gundam.
>>
i agree with many of the jrpg criticisms in here but at least they actually have some well thought-out gameplay instead of the run-of-the-mill action combat that feels like an afterthought in pretty much every western RPG (elder scrolls, witcher, pretty much just any series).
>>
>>345307743
It would be a nice throwback to the golden age of JRPGs but it won't bring anything new.
>>
>>345323952
The same thing is happening in a lot of mediums. The former fans are becoming creators and they simply aren't as skilled. They create things to imitate rather than inspire.

There's obviously a lot of other factors as well, the lack of any real auteurs is painfully obvious in video games as a whole. With the precious few we had either falling from grace or being shafted by their management.

It's like this game is perfectly attuned for my comfy preferences. Even the length doesn't really bother me, since I have a hard time sinking lots of time into games these days.
Not a fan of crafting systems though. I'll probably pick the game up, just not sure if it'll be at release or on sale.

This game is digital only on PS4 right? Shiet, I'm just a poorfag but it's hitting all my buttons. Redpill me on this game please, I wanna play it but I also wanna not spend 40 bucks when it's gonna be on PSN sale in 6 months for half (looking at you Need for speed, Dragon Age Inquistion GOTY edition, FFX HD, FF 0 HD etc. etc.)

VFD was such a fucking disappointment though compared to 2020.

They made it braindead easy for one. The new classes are cool and I appreciate that they mixed certain classes together, like giving Agent Hacker skills, but you become so OP so fast that you barely have to expend any effort. Duelist is the only class that requires some work and even it can wreck shit with constant field effects once it gets going.

It shits EXP and money left and right. I was nearing level 40 before even hitting the 8 hours mark and I wasn't even excessively grinding or anything. The combat system is just so naturally broken that you have to specifically limit yourself in most classes just to give enemies a turn. Agent in particular makes the game trivial, especially since they tweaked how Bush Trap works so it activates during ANY enemy attack now instead of just ones on allies. 2020 wasn't the pinnacle of difficulty either, but you had at least put some effort in and didn't become OP until late game.

The environments and overall setting are really lacking. The character art and designs are fine, but the dungeons feel really bland and uninteresting. Especially compared to stuff like 2020's Railway dungeon. The story also became super generic and none of the characters are that endearing. 2020 was actually pretty dark despite the chibi artstyle with a lot of named NPCs actually dying and getting decent development.

And lol at lots of "romance" options. You can take party members and certain NPCs on "dates" which are just two seconds of dialogue and then fade to a black screen. Don't try and make it out like it has some deep romance or affection system.

It's not all bad, but I wouldn't call it anything more than below average.

Protip: About 70% of how a game runs has zero to do with how it looks or what it was originally on but has to do with unchangeable (by the consumer anyway) settings the engine is put on when the game is compiled for the PC platform.

These settings have to do with how much GPU processing power is spent rendering areas and models. These settings may not even make much difference in how good the models or areas look(!), but the teams know that most PC gamers have at least such and such a GPU with such and such level of processing power so they will allow for settings with more complex rendering and this will leave people with older cards or even new iGPUs out in the cold because more processing will be done for EVERY single draw the game makes.

This is basically what might be called "engine overhead" which cannot be adjusted by the consumer.

The other 30% are things they might let you adjust but some of them will be full screen filters or lighting effects they won't let you turn off. Of that 30% maybe 15% is usually resolution. So you can gain an okay FPS boost by dropping your resolution, but most other things won't have much of an effect on your fps.

So there, why do PC games even let you config the settings they do when most of them will gain you about 1-2 fps? Who knows. Might as well just leave it all on high and tell the consumer to "fuck off and buy a new GPU" if s/he can't run it.

I don't consider a port good if its requirements are beyond what it's like. Usually those are shoddy ports in more ways too. With controller problems, unassignable actions, poor save system.
>>
>>345327547
Then LR was not a good port. Game looks like hot garbage and yet won't run at 30fps on an iGPU that will run stuff like Tomb Raider at >30fps

CT had ng+ and 11 endings.

Why will this not come out on PS4. What the fuck is the logic behind a PC and Vita release only? I just want a good comfy wizardry clone I can play stretched out on the sofa with a controller.

>>
>>345328349
Well the stuff you have to do to trigger them is non-linear. It's easy to say "game is X hours long" when it's your 10th playthrough and you know exactly where you need to go and what you need to do for all the optional content.

It's a pretty good RPG. I'd say it's one of the best RPGs for the SNES but saying it's one of the best RPGs ever would be going a bit far. but it's definitely worth checking out regardless
>>
>>345330457
It's pretty good, not nearly deserving of the praise it gets but still good. don't expect anything groundbreaking, just a top tier snes rpg
>>
>>345330457
To someone from 1995 it was great. Whether someone from our current FacebookMobileTwitter dystopia can appreciate it I'm not sure. Maybe all the things it does will look cliche or something. But the art is still beautiful. No one will ever match it because pixel art is dead except for indieshits.
