It would have been good if it was finished. Not great but good.
Now it's... alright. It's decent. It's adequate. It has its moments. What makes it frustrating is not what it is but what it isn't. And it isn't a satisfying conclusion for a long running, hugely influential, long running series. I didn't think Quiet and Venom had any relationship building at all. Yes, there were those freakishly intimate scenes, but they were freakish because they pretty much came out of nowhere.
It was so fucking hard to believe that Quiet forgave Venom for incinerating her lungs. Sure, you can say it wasn't personal but we were shown absolutely no transition.
Ocelot and Miller loved Venom/Big Boss. Straight up loved him so fucking much and you knew it.
But we got nothing from Quiet aside from huge look-at-how-much-she-likes-him scenes.

MGS3 is a beautiful and tragic story.

I disagree, the MGS games were and always will be unique. There has never been another AAA series that has been so personally handled and there likely never will be. They are experiences that, for the most part, feel as though they were "directed" by an individual instead of a team influenced from market analysis.

Some cool levels. The central base camp where you find Huey is nice, OKB Zero is alright, the mansion is cool but wasted and marred by the game's camera being better suited for the outdoors. Best level is maybe the oil refinery.
But outside of those the game has repetitive level design and repetitive missions. The game gives the player a lot of tools to cope with the repetition, but the game is also unbalanced as a result--which, unless you just like fucking around, makes the most compelling way to play the usual stuff. The open environments don't do the balancing any favors either. You can almost always just crawl or crouch walk your way to success, especially at night when the guards are nearly blind.
Over all it definitely isn't awful, though the story is atrocious.

It's a shame it wasn't properly finished, but it was still a great game overall and the best Metal Gear since Snake Eater. The gameplay is so damn fun, have about 100 hours in the game. I guess it's different if you don't have any expectations, I understand why longterm fans are pissed. Never cared about the story, so that part didn't bother me. I just had a lot of fun with the missions and making my base.
