the translation in modern monster hunter games is pretty awful. The translator inserts loads of his own personality into the game, making it full of memes and american pop culture

I preferred the early translations even if they're a bit rough. Much better atmosphere and tone.

A lot of Modern translators are all normie weeaboo's meaning a healthy dose autism injected straight into the whatever japanese game you're playing.

>>
>>345284257
Read what I said. This is my 5th Monster Hunter game, and I want to get back into the "real" game. The game is already tedious enough making you collect mushrooms and grind materials to make your weapon not bounce off the shittiest monsters, I don't want to read a page of USELESS dialogue before doing all that shit again.

I wasn't complaining that I don't know any features retard, I was complaining that all the useless text discourages learning them. Fuck off.

There are literal and liberal translations, but what the fuck could this even be called?

Of course not. You need to have money, connections, and all of that junk. You'll never translate anything unless you purchase a license from the company in Japan to do so.

But more often than not, they're just not interested, so no translation. And even at that, you'd need a publisher in the west unless all you do is doujin titles.

You don't have any idea what you're talking about.

The right is very much dynamic equivalence, break it down to it's most fundamental component.

>conveying information on how to learn to beat monsters

this is done on both, the right informs you about what the writer thinks is the most useful way for you to learn under the cover of flavourful writing. The left informs you how to navigate menus to find out about them. I don't know the game as I haven't played it yet, but based on what other people have said it's not actually very useful advice.

They both do the same thing at a conceptual level, there is just a disagreement about what is useful.

That's the issue though, it's a bit more specific than "how to beat monsters" and the right doesn't convey the same information as the left. The right just says to study the monster's attack patterns while the left recommends an in-game tool that has actual information about the monster.

So unless there's another piece of dialogue that tells the player about that data, it doesn't seem accurate or honest to the player about the game.

>>
The only acceptable localization is when it's for jokes/puns that will almost make no sense to a foreigner.

When you inject your bullshit into something that's not there, then it's a problem.

The dialogue could have still been "interesting" and informative like the left but they opted out with an easy "I'll meme it up" solution.

It's lazy writing at its finest.

The original left is supposed to sound like an informational help desk. She even throws in a sentence ending "wa" to sound more mature and feminine.

Anecdotally, I'm a different anon and this is my first MH game. I've skipped all of the dialogue in the village. It's really lame and doesn't even convey its information well.

I'd much rather look up the information on a much more comprehensive but also to-the-point wikia.

That's pretty much required for MH. Apparently it's on purpose so Jap players can talk and learn from each other's experiences.

You have it be a fucking tutorial.

It still is. The intent is the exact fucking same.

They're not alike at all. One tells you where to find info and how to update it. The other tells you to learn the monster's attacks and habits, and has some info about researchers.

>>
>>345295817
>you
>in charge of reading comprehension
One teaches you where to find a mechanic, the other gives you a tip to watch monster attacks and observe. They're two completely different things, and not alike at all. The only similarities is that there's a line about researchers, and the lines are being spoken by the same NPC.

That's my point.

>>345295962
Honestly, I don't have MHG due to not having a 3DS, and that is good advice, so I can't comment on the nature of the Hunter Notes. But you don't replace a tutorial with some advice that anyone with half a brain will pick up on (i.e. learn the attacks and know how each monster works). That's just a shitty job.
>>
>>345295817

>>
>>345300615
4U had a lot of memes. Also modern day american references that make no sense in the MH world. You know how the MH devs built up a world where society revolves around hunting monsters? Where all the food comes from monsters, the clothes, weapons, even the buildings are all made from monster parts. Then some localizer comes along talks about grabbing popcorn at the movie theater or something, throwing it all out of the window.
>>
>>345300775
Tri's writing was amusing and, most importantly, neither frequent nor long-winded.

MH4 was just WORDS WORDS WORDS making you talk to 50 people across 5 load screens between every single hunt, and now Gen has memes all over the place.

And I do mean all over the place, the Arts instructor is making Pokemon memes, the girl is making social media memes, like sweet mother of god I don't want to do this

They've ruined every single character in the game, including those that already had an established character like Granny from MHFU

The right side is actually better because it actually tells you how to get better at the game with a legit tip that a lot of new players don't know. You gotta learn those attacks and tells. Left side just says where it's at but doesn't say why you might want to go there. Not really a tip and more of a basic menu thing. This is all for new player though since anyone that's played any hunting game already knows this information.

Everything Jeff Gerstmann types is pure stupid. Being fluent in Japanese enough to know all of the words, kanji, references, and subtle nuances of dialect enough to get everything out of a Japanese game's text would require many years of study including living in Japan. This is not something anyone did in his "day" or anyone else's day, for that matter.
>>
>>345302551
It's the ultimate insult. I who never used the phrase am insulted by the fact that it has gained so much attention. People who use it are insulted because the game is telling them they're wrong. Everyone else is just bothered because they don't understand what's happening and would probably need some actually useful tips at that point in the game.

It's intentional, they're so sick of localizing MH that they're actually trying to make a shitty job to get fired.
>>
>>345289609

Granny in MHFU

>That sword in the cave was wielded by one of my ancestors. He used it to defend the village and repel a great monster long ago

(Builds up hype for Akantor and later reflects the fact that you perform the same feat while hinting at Akantor's weakness to dragon as chipped materials from the sword has dragon element)

Granny in MHGen

>That sword in the cave is our biggest sightseeing attraction! Maybe we should start selling Great Sword Cake?

(Does absolutely nothing)
>>
>>345289227
for all your talk about theory and debate you ignore something so simple yet essential as function and context.

the function of that dialogue is to give the player information about a game component/mechanic related to gameplay, in this case a specific menu, whereas the right one gives you advice that merely points you towards something that would be considered "meta", which is learning the monster's patterns through fighting, while not informing them at all about said helpful mechanic (the menu).

so all in all, the right side translation failed at the very basic level of what it was supposed to do, on top of being meme-filled "flavored" garbage.
>>
It's kinda funny that they removed a lot of the tutorial shit from the Japanese version and boom, let's just add some retarded lengthy dialog and more tutorial shit because localization
Doesn't impact me since I play in Japanese but it's funny how this shit is getting worse as time goes on
>>
>>345289848
it's not about assuming the player is retarded, something that in your case would be correct, it's about telling them what tools they have at their disposal.

this is tutorial/opening 101, it's basic shit like telling you what buttons do what so the player can solve puzzles and if he misses it's because he didn't execute shit right and not because he didn't know what to do. gathering information from something like a log is part of those tools.
>>
>>345302551
