It's no exaggeration to say that Miyamoto has been holding back the mario series for the last 15 years.

Galaxy only happened because they went over his head to develop it and then the dev team groveled on their knees to get his approval on the project.

Except Color Splash is the same goddamn shit as Sticker Star. Once Nintendo thinks up a shitty "new" idea they tend to milk it for all it's worth, while copy pasting as many boring assets (ie vanilla Toad) to keep it in "the series aesthetic".
Thank god for Breath of the Wild, hopefully Mario devs will learn something from their approach to "reinvention".

at a certain point you need to accept when a franchise has lost some essential, intangible quality that made it good. Maybe it was a developer's tastes changing, maybe it shifted genres, maybe it had a couple really awful trainwreck sequels. The circumstances are irrelevant; everyone recognizes when a franchise is 'dead'.
You can look at the comments of any article about a sequel announcement that refuses to return to its roots and continues in a cancerous direction. Even the normalfags can perceive it.
When this sort of thing happens, you should just celebrate the series when it was at its peak, and forget about all the trash that came later.
Every good idea gets ruined eventually. Only the best and most determined developers can crank out a bunch of popular sequels without the snake eating its own tail. The more threads we have about dead franchises being dead, the greater this miasma of depression and cynicism over /v/ will become.
