It's about on par with Heroes 2, has some severe casualization compared to Heroes 5.
The story is interesting enough imo, thought the Necropolis campaign is literally Twilight-tier.
H5 and H7 are definitely the much better games in Ubisoft-verse. H7 was kinda shitty on launch but they improved it a lot in post launch patches and there's another major one coming in 3 weeks.
H7 also has two campaigns set in the old NWC heroes universe, namely 2 campaigns that were supposed to be in Heroes 4 but never got finished due to financial constraints. The towns even work like in H4, have H4 music etc. H7 is criminally underrated due to the godawful broken state it launched in, that much I can tell you.
H6 is just "okay" if you want a more casual entry in the series.

No Inferno in H7, Sanctuary didn't return either due to supposedly bad public reception (personally I really liked them and they were a breath of fresh air) and they're adding Fortress in the expansion coming out next month.

Inferno lost to Dungeon and Fortress lost to Sylvan.
