When does this get good? I'm in Grasstown and just crawled through the fireplace. It's okay but so far I feel like I've been meme'd.

You fell for Mimiga furfag lies.

I get the impression it is trying to be like a Metroid game, although I've never really played one so the appeal is lost on me
>>
>>345184095
It gets really difficult as you get further.

It's a decent game, but I never got the appeal
I bought it because I played the Demo on the wii shop channel
I honestly thought it was a decent, but nothing spectacular

Honestly, the story is good, but nothing special.

If you enjoy the gameplay then keep playing, you get more weapons and upgrades which makes the game more interesting, and it's up to you if you decide to utilize them. There will always be that guy who says "I used the pea shooter throughout the entire thing" but I found myself using every item for certain situations. There is a difficulty spike, so don't worry if you feel like it's too easy.

KEEP IN MIND, that the game is your average Metroidvania, and that for it's time (early 2000's) it was a cool freeware indie title, back then, you didn't see too much of those. So have the mindset of having an average story, pretty good gameplay. Nothing innovative, but impressive considering it was all done by one guy, prepare for hell

or Zero mission, those two games alone are the best 2D metroids I didn't like how linear fusion was

It gets god tier once you enter the labyrinth.
>>
>>345184095
It doesn't. Badly designed and overall horrible. Just play Undertale OP, it's pretty much Cave Story done right.

I just think it's really comfy to play, not spectacularly challenging or anything until the secret dungeon, it gets a little harder at the end of the sand zone though

Jumping around on the side of the land mass fighting those weird flying pillow cat things with the jet pack was top tier atmosphere, I wish the music from the lost level could have made it in there

If the game hasn't been fun for you at all by Grasstown, it's probably not for you then.
>>
It never gets drastically better. In fact, the whole game is pretty basic. It's good in a "Wow, one guy on /v/ made this game all by himself and I'm lucky enough to be part of the minority that plays it" and to get your retro fix in.

You will play it, beat it, and then won't think about it for a few years, but them you'll start to miss it and play through it and enjoy it more someday.
>>
>>345187074
It's not a Metroidvania
>>
I recently played it and thought it was really just good.
I don't get the reviews I've read on it or some of the posts I've seen on /v/ that claim it's a literally PERFECT game though.

Though the lens of it being all by one guy though, I'll admit its pretty amazing.

Why? It's pretty clear what it means. Unlike shit like Roguelike.
>>
>>345190002
I just don't understand why -vania is thrown in.
I would be fine with the term Metroid-like, as basically all the characteristics of the subgenre come from Metroid.
>>
>>345189993
Not that I know of, I don't know why that anon brought up /v/, the guy had been working on the game for something like 10 years anyway, quite a while before this boards time
>>
>>345190179
I guess to include games that are more melee focused like the metroidvania style Castlevania games are. Dunno.
>>
>>345184095

It's awful that a good game like undertale has been reduced to an ebin /v/ meme.

>Why? It's pretty clear what it means. Unlike shit like Roguelike.

What? Roguelike is exactly what it says on the label, it means a game that's literally like Rogue.

It just jets misused a lot in the modern vernacular to mean any game of any genre with procedural content and character perma-death when Rogue is a top down dungeon crawler
>>
>>345190502
I sincerely and unironically agree.

Do it for her.
Save her

Really though it's got solid, interesting and challenging gameplay with a simple but well executed story.

I think Cave Story is one the best games at forging character attachments to the player, especially so without being forced upon the player.
The story kind of just happens with you both observing and being plopped right into the middle of it, and the player character and you the player basically just roll with the punches.
It's this point in which I really feel the game excels, Quote's motivations match the player's motivations; you're not the chosen one or anything, just some guy who woke up in a cave and is literally just going forward.
You slowly find out more about what happened on the island and the characters the more you play, and the game doesn't really give you any reason to dislike them either.
It's amazing how much I grew attached to the characters in such a short amount of time, and how hurt I felt when they died due to my mistakes

There's just so many little things that it gets right that it's hard not to like it.
True ending is what makes it God-tier though; sweet Jesus when I found out you could save her.
>>
>>345190683
But that's who the term Rogue-lite got invented
So you can tell when some indie is just trying to ride the genre recognition.

I think it's pretty cute fun. I love the gameplay, music and atmosphere, but I understand that not everyone can get into this kind of game.
>>
You really had to play it back when there were like 6 indie games in existence, rather than nowadays where 20+ are released on steam every day and pixel art graphics lost their appeal years ago
>>
>>345184095
It's great because it's free and pretty much flawless. Everything from level design and story to music and art is at least solid and at times brilliant.
It's not very innovative though. Won't change your life, if that's what you expected.
>>
It's a short game, so just play to the end and you'll get it.
>>
>>345190780

There is no good ending to Cave Story.
>>
>>345190179

Because of Castlevania you bellend. Same game in a fantasy setting.

Christ.
>>
>>345194362
I understand that, I just don't see why Castlevania should be tied to the subgenre besides what this >>345190298 anon said.
>>
>>345184095
It's horribly overrated. Only weebs like it.

It's not a bad game and for free you can't really complain but to say its a masterpiece is just nostalgia.
>>
>>345195505

SOTN was the first time a lot of people played a game like that.

Yeah but Metroid did it all first. Adding "vania" is just redundant.

That's like saying Raiders of the Lost Ark is a "Secret of the Incas"-like, and not just calling it an adventure film.

I absolutely despise weebshit and can confirm that this anon is wrong

So this should have no greater importance?
>>
>>345195897

Not at all. I'm just speculating about the term, not endorsing it.
>>
>>345195505
IIRC, the name "Metroidvania" originally just referred to Castlevania games with the Metroid format. I could be wrong, but years ago when I first encountered the term that's the only context I ever saw it in.
>>
>>345196290
That makes sense, and I mean it's more catchy than saying "Metroid-like" or something like that so it makes sense that it caught on.
>>
>>345188373
It's ok if you like JRPG's. It was pretty revolutionary for its time because it had a much heavier focus on story telling, weird characters and a good time travel mechanic.

Today it's charm is gone really. Plenty of other games have come out that are just as good if not better.

It's like Ocarina of Time. At the time it was really fucking cool but now it is showing its age (Chrono trigger not so much but still)

>>
>>345196290
You are correct. In fact, it was used primarily in a mocking context. Like CV should have been more original.
>>
>>345184095

It doesn't. It's good compared to most other platformers which are fucking horrendous. That's why it is praised as an example to others.
>>
>>345198234
>It's okay but so far I feel like I've been meme'd.
Sort of. You'd be had pressed to tell someone to watch Citizen Kane if they wanted a compelling drama.

You watch if you like the art of film, since it did a lot radical things for its time.
>>
>>345184095
It's just a decent game. None of it really stands out, but it's fun enough to keep you going.

There's also a secret level at the end that's only unlocked by doing a sequence of weird shit along the way that you'll never find out on your own.

It's one of those things that you would naturally attempt to do on repeat playthroughs. Hence why it's a secret, and why it's very difficult.

You fags always spoil it.
