Romero didn't like how Carmack was basically re-hashing doom all the time and not really innovating. Carmack didn't like how Romero was giving out grandiose statements about Quake, and being more of a celebrity than a programmer.

Id software's fall from glory was inevitable, since all the chaos was there from the beginning, with Adrian being an edgy cunt towards Tom.

I've been reading Masters of Doom and I feel bad for Tom Hall. Everyone kept pushing to get edgier and edgier with their shit, and Tom Hall still wanted to make a new Commander Keen game. He also made a very elaborate story bible for Doom, and the whole thing got thrown out because of John Carmack's "story in games is like story in porn" philosophy, and Romero didn't really care because as long as there was lots of violence he was happy.

I wonder, is John Carmack going to get bored working at Oculus? I know VR is something he's extremely passionate about but Oculus has already been surpassed by Vive, which makes me wonder if he's being sufficiently challenged.

It wasn't that Tom Hall didn't like how things were getting edgier and edgier, it was more so that he didn't have any creative freedom at all. Of all the proposed episode names in the Doom Bible, only Knee-Deep in the Dead made it into the game. When you're a creative designer, and you're told that the next game has no story, what the fuck are you supposed to do?
