I picked it up about a year ago and I was hooked. I had previously been a WoW player off and on for the last decade and FFXIV is easily more polished and better looking. The story is pretty cool, but the lore of the world is confusing and hard to breach, and personally I think WoW does story/lore much better since it doesn't exist in a vacuum.
After I hit lvl 50 in FFXIV, I needed to do some raids to progress through the storyline, raids which are obsolete and took hours to que for. When I did get into the raid, I was instructed to just follow everyone else and to ignore mechanics and trash that we were aggroing to finish the content as fast as possible. This happened every time I queued for content. Like WoW, there's tons of currency types that are hard to understand, or not necessary since the content is obsolete. My guild tried to help me navigate it all, but I just hit a wall with the game in general. Professions and other classes you switch to requires tons of different gear sets you're switching to constantly. Lots of boring grinding since once you've done the main story, the other quests are lackluster and not worth the time.
Actually, the best way to level is not doing quests at all, but running back and forth to timed events with 40 other people doing the same thing.
I went back to WoW, because it was still comfy, and despite the lack of content in WoD, the game still has fun things to do.
I'd say try FFXIV out since its cheap, but don't get your hopes up, MMOs are still outdated concept pieces with bad combat. WoW keeps me going because I'm invested in the story, and since I played for so long, I have access to massive resources that eases the grind.

Brute Justice is done the second you learn long needle, and the intermissions are just a dance with a bit of awareness attached. Gavel is just "know your job's 2 possible roles". My general thoughts on the game when I still had time to play:games
1. The best gaming community hands down, super rare to find a toxic player.
2. Polished game, constant updates coming in to keep you entertained.
3. The music is top tier.
4. The environment is incredibly detailed.
5. You can play any class with only one character.

The only thing that I can think of that put me off from buying it initially is the subscription but it was money well spent and its easy to see that there is still a lot of funding going into developing more content.

It's a pretty generic MMO overall, though it does have really good production value and a plot that is bearable, even if it too is generic.
Combat starts out unbearably slow early on, seriously I wanted to kill myself when I first started. It gets better in the late game, and I'm pretty sure leveling overall is much faster now than it was but you'll still notice that it feels slow.
You're really not missing much, though. Plenty of other games to try that are free and require no subscription.

First intermission is pretty reliant on how well people can move their camera and notice the chakram pattern. A callout system helps if some people are slow at it. Since the chakrams are not that big themselves, and the arena is pretty big, it might take time to figure it out, and you don't have forever to do that.

I've put about 900 hours into FFXIV over the past year-and-a-half. Make of that what you will. That said, I'm still not convinced of its lasting appeal. Where I once played FFXIV near-every day, now I sub once every few months to play the new patch content, then stop and wait for the next.

The atmosphere changed a lot though, due to the constant casualization of content. FCs rarely talk, players rarely talk. The biggest mistake of the game was taking away the experience of being able to do things the way they were done at release or close to it. Coil of Bahamut was awesome. But it's so irrelevenant now and gets steamrolled due to sheer overgearing. You should have the OPTION of doing the dungeon/raid/trial using this formula for iLvl: (item level of gear dropped + 10). I think if you do it that way, you should also get enhanced rewards to incentivize it. If things were done my way though, steamrolling the content at uncapped iLvl would give you no rewards at all, not even story progress. It'd just be for fun,
Basically the game has so many cool places and ideas that had so much effort put into them gathering dust.

Then BRD got buffs and they're about equal now. MCH is still more difficult to play though, which sucks. A class that takes more effort should bring more results.

The game makes an awful first impression.
2.5 GCD is in full effect and the only class that's even remotely fun to start with is PGL since they get their full combo string at level 6 instead of level 26 like everyone else.

Functionally they're fine. The can tank just as well as PLD and WAR while beating out PLD DPS and beating out WAR DPS as Main Tank
Mechanically the class is a mess though. Lots of skills are dependent on other skills being active and others are locked out if you have particular stance on. The biggest problem I have with it is that dropping your tank stance is such a struggle since it's on the GCD but is still technically an off global skill (PLD has this issue but since they have to switch between two stances rather than simply dropping one it doesn't feel as bad).
