It's a great tool for making walking enjoyable. I would never play it for it's own sake but it's a great supplement for burning some calories while having fun.
Seeing what pokes pop up around me is fun. The actual game part is beyond shit. The app in general is unstable as fuck and the servers go down at least once a day. I can't see this lasting past the winter months when no one will want to go outside and walk around with their phone out.

I've had fun playing it over the past week.
This does not though sadly stop the game from being completely fucking broken and should never have been released in it's current form where it's basically a pre-alpha where the features implemented don't even work correctly (Gyms are still fucked and pointless, Rare Phantom Pokemon are the bane of my existence) and the game crashes every 5 minutes

I have no issues with people enjoying this app.
It's the ones who call this a game and imply that it will replace the main series. There are several (obvious but I'll spell it out for any retards here) reasons why this isn't it the case.
1) Casuals are that, casuals. They will get bored of this and move on. It will make a lot of money short term like other mobile games do. Like TV shows, the userbase will even out in a year or two but it won't be /printing money/ consistently.
2) Nintendo isn't making as much from this as they do from the main series of games. Yes, they have investments in this game and in Niantic, but as I said the normies will stop supporting this game. Closer to home, this is what happened with the Wii and will happen here.
3) I repeat, THIS IS NOT A GAME. You go around and catch Pokemon. Fine, it's an interesting app. However, there is no traditional Pokemon battle system, no levelling up Pokemon, no real trainer battles or trading. I am aware they intend to update for these, but it still won't be anywhere near as in-depth as the main games.
I dread to think how much further the Fire Emblem series will be degraded with its upcoming mobile app. If Pokemon Go only retained the catching Pokemon aspect of its games, what will the one aspect taken from the FE series be?

I finally tried this out today. I'm with Pokemon for 15 years and this app was NO FUN for me. I walked 30 minutes which isn't much as I sometimes walk 3 hours and all I got was a CP 10 Weedle. Meanwhile there's a 532 CP Magmar sitting in the only Gym I can actually see. I'm living relatively far from the city so I was about to vomit thinking how strong the mons would be in a higher populated part.
For now the game has close to no substance. At least they could have kept it closer to the mainline by not having this ridiulous CP rating.
I'll try it out a few times more but it just feels so much more like a waste of time than ordinary games already do. If played regular Pokemon I had like 1-2 competitive Pokemon in the time I got a 10 CP Weedle.

you can beat a 500 CP gym with a team of 60 CP pokemon (although most of them will have fainted so you'll have to either chug revives afterwards or just not use those pokemon for a battle again)

I should have made the disctinction, but there's casual and then there's "casual".
"Casual" in the sense of Pokemon Go is that EVERYONE seems to be playing it. It's plastered all over the media. Everyone is consuming it. Let's not forget that this "casual" market is the one that invested in the Wii and then moved on when mobile gaming took off in the late early 10s. We know this because of the Wii's sales numbers and its dropoff around that period.
Main series Pokemon games are casual experiences that attract the /v/ definition of a casual audience, but they do not have the exposure that Go does.

This is the second time I'm explainging this, I do not consider Pokemon Go a game. This is exactly WHY I define it as another level of casual altogether. These people see it as a game regardless of our own personal standards.
