The game doesn't mention specifics but based on how his other gang members acted, you can safe assume that it was a lot of bad shit.
He can't bring back all of the people they murdered, return the money to the took, the cattle they rustled, the jaywalking, etc.
You'll pay for it in the end and that's exactly what happened.
Was it sad? Not really since a happy ending just wasn't in the cards from the start.

I thought the ending was good, I loved John, but it couldn't possibly end any other way for him. You can't live the life of an outlaw and one day turn your back on it and expect to get a peaceful life after you kill some old outlaw friends and expect that to be enough to absolve you of your past dirty deeds.

Not every story needs to end on a happy end.
To be frank it's quite a classical redemption ending. Not to defend that cunt of a marshall/sheriff whatever ,but it's pretty much about a man that need to pay for his past misdeeds ,and he did a fuck ton.
It could have been better if we had a revenge arc after he was betrayed by the sheriff that killed his wife ,leading to a mass shootout ,not caring about life anymore ,but I'm way too drunk to write something intelligent about that atm
I honestly thought the ending was too depressing.
I was almost in tears when John was reunited with his family. I was so happy for him. And to see him trying to connect with his family - struggling at first - but still trying to connect, like riding with his wife into town, or hunting with his son. It was beautiful. I don't understand why the end of the game had to be so depressing.

I loved the game and I like the ending too.
