The last few years, discounting Boom, has been pretty good for 3D Sonic. Generations and Colors really refined the daytime-system from Unleashed and we've had a decently long period of no-needless gimmicks distracting from the core gameplay. Even with Lost World being somewhat of a disappointment to me, it's still leaps and bounds over Sonic at his worst.

Sonic is at its best when its just a basic platformer with homing attack and high top speed. Even Shadow The Hedgehog had better base gameplay, even if the controls were splashy at times

It's not a meme, it's the truth. The games were never anything above mediocrity. They were always cheap souless platformers compared to the Super Mario counter parts. They're only popular because Sega pushed for them and never let go.
