The uncourageous boatload of historical inaccuracies instead of going the Red Orchestra route and making a game that tries to be true to its period only gives people something to talk about other than all the flaws BF3 and BF4 had. This game will have those same flaws, the same minority of people will like them, the threads will peter out again because the game isn't interesting enough to sustain a community, and we will see another DICE game in 3 years purporting to be the newest greatest thing ever that ends up just being a reskin of the last few games with some features tactfully removed and sold as DLC.
But that isn't really interesting to talk about microtransactions again, or shitty dlc again, or bad hitbox and ballistic simulation as well as a joke of a tickrate again.

It's not a big stretch.
I mean pretty much the modern FPS genre stems from CS but really BF has been emulating it for decades with the slogan "We'll be like CS but BIGGER and BETTER".
But really what this translates to is a watered down shooter with sometimes a fun tactical twist and combined arms.
CoD has been doing much of the same although stemming from more humble origins, but that's a given and it hasn't really gone too far from its source. And lately they've been looking at BF and saying BUT I WANT TO BE BIG TOO. Resulting in the clusterfuck that is advanced warfare.
Of course there are major differences, but I don't think the connection is a far-fetched one.

The problem is that the WW1 troops were mainly armed with bolt action rifles, that's fucking it. There were only a handful of heavy machineguns per regiment.
Light machineguns were completely absent outside the rare field testing in combat conditions and submachineguns were also uncommon even at the end of the war.
