There's a reason I used quotes. The "outdated" game mechanics are freedom of movement and emergent gameplay.
For some reason people think that older games are by definition limited in all ways compared to modern games when most of this thinking is caused by worse graphics and clunkier looking animations. I remember someone watching me play Hitman 2 once and I opened a door and went into a building and the guy was surprised and told me he was expecting the game to have to load.
