It looks okay but god does it play like shit. Sonic is really floaty and hard to control, some of the enemies just seem impossible to attack, the camera isn't suitable for going anywhere outside of the small 'main' pathways, there's multiple easy ways to get stuck forever or otherwise stuck in very bad locations, I could go on. This game has a lot of very serious problems just from 5-10 minutes of play on the first level. The one thing I can give it is that the visuals and music are very good. The game itself is not very enjoyable at all though, and ultimately just plays like a disappointing attempt at emulating Mario 3D Land.

I have trouble even knowing what you would do with a big sonic zone anyway. Enemies basically don't matter in a 3D space, and what else is there to a sonic game beyond the physics and platforming and exploration?

I guess this is why collectathons came about, needed an excuse for why the player should want to comb an otherwise empty 3D space. Though I'd argue that with a game such as Mario 64, half of the fun comes from just playing the game.

For Sonic games, I assume you need big spaces to go fast in. If it's small and cramped you're going to get stopped a lot and that's just annoying, it's like getting a sports car that only goes 30kmph due to city traffic.

Sonic games really haven't been much about exploration, in a way. I mean, there's always alternate paths to take and maybe a secret doohickey that lets you get to the bonus stage for chaos emeralds but that's about it. Now that I think about it, a big open world with lots of places to explore might make for an interesting Sonic game.Especially if you can make it a dynamic and pretty world with day and night cycles or something.

That's just not true though. While perfectly capable of possessing slower jumping segments (as they did), Sonic 1 but especially Sonic 2 and onward were full of popcorn speed moments. Just look at the number of loops put into emerald hill vs. green hill, or the crazy-fast drop/loop chains in chemical plant. Even the spindash itself was introduced so that players would spend less time mastering sonic's movement and more time going fast. The series has always gone more toward giving the players cool-looking speed sequences or getting them going fast.

I feel like the classic games were sort of heading in the "open world" direction.

CD and 3K had so many little hidden goodies and alternate paths. Especially compared to 1 and 2.

3K in particular had act to act and zone to zone transitions, making it feel more and more like a connected singular world. CD's level design allowed for backtracking.

Combine those two ideas, and you'd have something more akin to a Metroidvania: seamlessly integrated areas that you can go back and forth between.

The ultimate reason why that didn't happen, I argue, is that Sonic Adventure happened when it did, meaning, it happened at the opening of 3D as a popular choice on consoles. There was no way that a mid/late 90s console would handle a fast-paced, physics-driven, open-world platformer, especially not with the popcorn moments that players had come to expect. As a result they had to compromise, and it was easier to focus on making a good-looking, very linear experience than it was to try this very bold and difficult execution.

I would argue that some other factors apply as well, but what I said here would comprise the bulk of why Sonic ended up taking the path that it did.

Yeah. If they stayed 2D, Metroivania/open world style game design was definitely the next logical step. But 3D happened, and more importantly, 3D Mario happened. If Sonic stayed 2D, Mario would have won, and we couldn't have that, could we?

And it's a shame. I would definitely rather have Sonic bow out with his dignity and stay in he 2D realm for a while longer, rather than embarrass himself by trying to keep up in a race he just wasn't fit for.

Yeah, physics aren't everything. Nor is level design. Moveset is important too.

Regarding that fangame in particular, I'm not fond of the boost being accessible freely like that. It's a far-cry from the gameplay style of hold that I've been talking about wanting replicated in 3D (that's not to say that different gameplay styles can't work for Sonic).

You've gotta earn your speed by mastering the terrain, not pressing a button to blast through it (as fun and exhilarating it might be the first couple of times).

More seamlessly integrating different levels, allowing backtracking across multiple levels, removing the timer, building the levels to be able to be backtracked through without quite going to the insanity that CD gave us. More than 2 player co-op, co-op with multiple screens, co-op online, competitive multiplayer online and in actual stages. Having different combinations of characters paired together. Multiple different exits to a given act/zone, similar in theory to what Shadow the Hedgehog did.

So many different things that several official games and romhacks alike have attempted, in individual instances, but never in an attempt to directly expand on and polish 3K's formula.

They did to the point were fan games start putting big disclaimers in beginning but would still get taken down. That's why that Sonic 2 HD game never got past Emerald Hill Zone. The only game I know of that they never took down was Sonic 3D Robo Blast and that other Sonic CD game. After the sequel or whatever it's called.

Pretty sure that's exactly how it works in this fangame, actually. It isn't the Boost. It's what he calls "mach mode." It apparently works like it does in Advance 2/3 where you could only break into that afterimage mode when you built up enough speed.

From what I can tell from this one sonic pulls in rings during his mach state leading me to believe that the other benefits that he would normally get from the Boost have been translated to this new physics-based state. Seems like a neat idea and the webms are pretty appealing, but I won't pass judgement until I've actually played the thing.

It's not. Got the humble bundle to scratch my curiosity and I'm surprised how much I hated it. I can't even call it a Sonic game. You don't go fast at all, and the platforming is needlessly complicated (two jump buttons, and a run button). Even the forced speed sections aren't fast. The only good thing they did was the parkour system, but even that needs work. It feels like some sort of DKCR/Mario Galaxy hybrid, but without what made either fun.

I hope the next game pretends it never happened and goes back to Boost.

My biggest problem with fan games like this is that there's so much clutter and effects on the screen. It looks tacky and fucks with the visual clarity of the game.

I ain't impressed.

They spell out the wall run solution out for you, and then they go out of their way to make it so that's the only way real way to achieve it. There appears to be no other way to get into that half pipe, and the little path way to the left and behind it doesn't seem to have enough space for to build that speed before hand or smoothly go into that half pipe segment. You have to stop and make your way up on that half pipe to build up the speed for a mach state so that you can go into that wall run.

I know Sonic fans love to jerk off over "MUH MOMENTUM" but this game seems to forgot the fact that the level design should have a good smooth flow between segments in order to make good use of it. This set piece requires you to step and set up just so you can jerk off over the physics.

Even then, there's a lot of down time. You launch off the pipe, and then what? You're floating in the air until you finally come back down, doing nothing but slowly re positioning yourself. How many times are you going to have to do that before it becomes an annoyance. These guys sure as hell don't oppose reusing set pieces over and over again. A majority of their webms always show off a ridiculously huge loop that seems to have no purpose for existing other than it's a Sonic game, we need loops.

I mean, I'm glad that there are people passionate about the technical details about what made Sonic games special, but rarely do I ever see anyone that can manage to make a level design that actually feels like it belongs in a Sonic game. It's just a haphazard placements of set pieces and gimmicks.

This game could be goood if the controls weren't so fucking slippery. Why does rolling on a flat surface accelerate you out of control? Why can't you destroy monitors by rolling? Why does Sonic accelerate to max speed in like a second and why is his max speed way above what the levels are built for? I hope this gets an update because I want to like it, but I just can't deal with these controls.
