This game made me a bitch. I saw that massive level 99 Denios in Makana Forest and just quit. I really did try to get past it once but it saw me and used Devour X and killed me every time. Fucker won't move either so I can't get past it and another one is shielding a unique monster I need to kill for a mission. Whoever made these massive creatures is a fucker.

Everyone always says you don't need a healer in this game, and I suppose that's true at super end game when Reyn, Shulk, and Dunban are topple-locking everything, but did anyone else find Sharla and Riki immensely useful when you first hit end game and have to deal with massive level disparity?

Some of the lines they say, like reminding you that a chain attack is ready, finding out that enemy reinforcements have arrived or stating the art move they're using can help you. Let's say you inflict break to an enemy with Sharla using Metal Burst, but have to inflict sleep using Tranquilizer to an enemy reinforcement behind you. You hear Reyn shout "WILD DOWN!" and you now know that said broke enemy is toppled, preparing you much faster to inflict daze to it with Head Shaker, and then finish it off with Headshot.
Although I can agree that some lines like "I'M REALLY FEELING IT!" can get annoying.

Healers were basically a cruch for me since I never bothered to use gems affectively until late game and never really mastered topple locking.
The only problem I have with Riki is that he couldn't decide whether he wanted to be a tank or not. Massive HP pool, some skills that SEEM to point towards tanking, but then most of his skills are DoTs and debuffs.
12/10 party member regardless.

They made characters without character or worthwhile depth and change the party perspective to maxing damage yourself rather than relying on others at all.
It's very cool to kill things over the level cap alone, but it is quite lonely.
As someone who just auto equipped the strongest gear and steamrolled the game by overleveling, what was I actually supposed to be doing?
The only thing that gave me trouble was that penultimate boss that has spike damage, which I ended up cheesing with Riki DoTs.

instead of overleveling you should have taken every over leveled boss fight as your queue to lay off the main quests for a while and just take in what you've propably missed out on like fully exploring gaur plains and completing your collectopedia and getting as far as you could in the reconstruction of colony 6, by then you would have propably gained enough gems and levels to get back on track. i'm mainly talking about lorithia here. she was a cunt the first time around

the beauty of the combat in xenoblade is that you can go about it however the fuck you want.
Of course there are some set ups that are better than others, but the characters are all unique and different enough that there's a playstyle for everyone and you can still beat the game your way.

And also I think a good way to give yourself a fair amount of challenge throughout the game is to limit the amount of quests you do and progressing the story efficiently (meaning no exp, ap, sp or affinity grinding.)

There's a lot of bosses that rely on Talent Arts you need to block. At those points unless you're REALLY fuckin good it's basically suicide to not use Shulk.
Even so the game very rarely forces him into the party, it prefers to just beat it into your head that he should be there.

X isn't terrible, but it's not really up to par with the first.
One of the biggest letdowns is that instead of a tightly knit, memorable party the game constantly forces the protagonist and these two other characters into your team almost all the time.
The bulk of the rest of your team is made up of optional, one-note characters with simple personalities. So the gist of it is that X goes for quantity over quality.

The problem with X is that the MC becomes absolutely fucking broken once you unlock and learn how to use Overdrive to the point where no AI can keep up and you can practically solo the entire game. It doesn't help that the MC can literally learn every class in the game and then mix and match them as he pleases, so he's able to fill all the roles by himself. At least Shulk was a glass canon that needed a tank to take the heat off him.

An ares sure, but things like the headless brontosaurus in oblivia can't be killed by even a full set of stock ares. Its better for farming gems than fighting the last few endgame bosses. Not to mention there are some that you cant fight with skells due to location or skellbuster moves.

Nah, at least not in my opinion. I think the best word to describe it would just be "different". While Chronicles had better story and characters, X had a better world (subjective), much much better combat (also subjective) and the side quests were leagues beyond any of the side quests in Chronicles (objective). I mean sure it has the same kind of "collect X or this" as basic quests, but normal and affinity quests all had their own mini stories with cutscenes and choices and all that, which wasn't present in the side quests of Chronicles to my knowledge. In fact I'd say around 90% of the story in this game comes from the side quests, and most of it is quite good. I personally vastly prefer overdrive to chain attacks but to each their own, and I thought exploration was much better in X even though I loved the concept of being on two giant robots more, ther was just so much shit to find in Mira. Again, that's subjective but I wouldn't say that X is in any way a worse game, I enjoyed the hell out of it, but I love it for different reasons than I loved chronicles.
