The DS game is why people keep comparing this series to EO(even though by now they're completely different). You have 4 party members, and if you played EO1, then you will no doubt notice the similarities in the classes and skill trees. You level up and get skill points to spend. The worst part about the first game is how 90% of the world is covered in damage tiles(no exaggeration there), and the encounter rate is extremely high. That's why when you go to download the English patch, you will notice there is a "US version" that reduces tile damage and the encounter rate, though I think that ruins half of the challenge of the game(otherwise it's already somewhat easy).
2020 and its sequel play completely differently. This time you only get 3 party members, and the skill trees are just a list of skills that you level up with SP you get from battles, and you unlock more as the game progresses, not as you level up. 2020-II isn't that important to the story, but both the original and 2020 contain pretty important characters that also show up in 3. 3 will explain everything you need to know from all the games, there are quests specially for that purpose, so yes they are all stand alone. However, the references and certain scenes will not have the same impact if you haven't already played them.

On a side note exit has to be the most pointless skill. The item that does the exact same thing is dirt cheap and I've used like 5 so far throughout the entire game.
Quests don't expire/have time limit, right? That Blue Dragon in Sky Tower 3F is impossible with the best starting gear and Level 10-12

It's pretty good. There are some weird balance issues, but it's got a good story, great music, great character design, and an addicting progression system.
The game does seem designed for former EO players, since there are shared but unexplained mechanics 7D has that's borrowed from EO (example being getting a preemptive strike on dragons if their back is turned)
