I think the free time segments are pretty annoying. I'd drop the whole gift crap and instead just say "hey, this is your chance to get to know a character you like better" instead of trying to make it gamey and getting in the way of characterization.
The meat of the gameplay like the class trial is really fun though.
2 has better waifus overall but my favorite girlKirigiriis from DR1. It's a tough choice.
DR1 left a better impression on me after beating it.
DR2's ending had a very "We're milking this cash cow for all it's worth" vibe and I got burnt out on the franchise.

But really, both a great and 1 has some things that 2 does not and vice versa. Trial music is better in 1. Everytime you break a statement and the closing argument has more sound effects. Hangman was also better in 1 than in 2
I prefer 2, but 1 has better atmosphere and some of the case motivations were great. I didn't enjoy any of the actual cases themselves beyond said motivations though and the investigations weren't fun due to the player having to be on Kyoko or Togami's leash 90% of the time even in the investigation segments.

They both are plagued with disappointing endings to be honest.
That being said I like DR2 for a lot of it's cast + the mystery solving, and ZE for the story in general & all those alternate routes. Feels pretty good enjoying both while you guys are too busy with this dumb circlejerk consisting of the same responses everytime to even be able to enjoy either of them.
Dangan ronpa 1 is a lot of fun but i like dangan ronpa 2 more.

I'm not the only one who's enamored by the two shows combined, right? You get this wonderful blend of the light-hearted events before 2 turning into Despair while simultaneously getting a Despair filled world that will possibly turn into one of Hope. There's some cool connections between the both of them too, like the characters building the Future Foundations building (an overseas school) during the Despair Arc, which eventually will become the school that they get trapped in for another Killing Game in the Future Arc.
Everything just seems to be tying in so nicely, while also explaining the rest of the story. I hope to God they can carry this momentum going through, and that it doesn't fall apart anywhere (in quality, not in characters falling into despair).

1. I guessed the twist in 2 less than five minutes into the game and then the majority of the game was spent trying to learn the twist from the first game. They also somehow made Hangman's Gambit even worse, and the Machine Gun Battle was also worse.
The skiing minigame thing was okay, I guess, and Komaeda was great. The rest of the characters were just so much less interesting than the first's, and the first game isn't exactly great anyway.
