HG/SS, Platinum, and B2W2 are arguably the pinnacle of Pokemon, but the last one is best played after BW. Emerald is also pretty solid, though more dated compared to the others.
Honestly, I'd try Platinum for a new experience, and play HGSS after for the nostalgia factor + new features, then move onto either BW -> B2W2 or play a Emerald hack that adds the phys/spec split before that.

Negative. It's the best when standalone maybe, but with remakes Heart Gold Soul Silver has the best of Generation IV pokes and mechanics along with the best map, trainers, gyms, story and includes fucking EVERYTHING and can accept trades from EVERYWHERE and it's just the best.
