I have a friend who works at Niantic. Apparently, whenever they proposed adding any depth to the game, the Pokemon Company shot them down because they WANTED this game to be accessible to literally anyone. They wanted your 90 year old grandma with dementia to be able to pick up and play this game. Disbelieve me if you want, but it's not like I'm saying anything outrageous. It's a successful product precisely because it is not a video game.
The "gameplay" consists of going out and exploring the real world. Pokemon GO simply rewards that behavior just enough for your typical couch-bound normie to move his pudgy ass a few hundred meters more per day.
Had Niantic forced a battle system, this product would not have seen nearly the amount of market saturation it has, because most normies don't like RPGs of that sort.
If they ever do implement a pokemon battle system, it will either be:
a) incredibly simplified
or
b) 100% voluntary and having zero impact upon core mechanics such as gym ownership
Pokemon GO is a mobile app for normies to enjoy. The core audience is not hardcore pokemon fans who want to battle.

Actually with how popular Pokemon Go is, Microsoft would be extremely tempted to buy Nintendo or at least the Pokemon franchise from Nintendo.
The biggest reason Microsoft bought Minecraft was only how large the playerbase was and now Pokemon Go is on its way to surpass Minecraft.
If Pokemon Go maintains its success, Microsoft has a high chance of buying Pokemon or Nintendo.
Not only that but Pokemon Go is one way for Microsoft to save their phone line or hype up the Surface Phone that is rumored to be capable of x64 with the help of a customized Intel chip.

Currently it's #1 purely because of Pokemon nostalgia, everyone is riding high in the honeymoon phase and nobody really cares about how good the actual game is.
But they will start noticing the complete lack of any depth after a couple of months. Catching the same Pokemon over and over with no mechanics only to go to the same gyms and taptaptap to battle is going to exhaust people.

Not really essential, you get some lucky eggs through leveling and can simply save all your evolutions for when you decide to activate it, thus giving only a marginal advantage to people that buy them. You also get coins through contesting Gyms, I control about 5 right now which is 50 coins a day.
I agree it shouldn't have any pay-wall advantage but the advantage is slim. Beyond this, nobody plays Pokemon for competition really anyway.

You have to understand OP that the game has become a gateway for people to stand up and interact with the outside world, all under the principle of playing an unpolished app based around one of the best nostalgia-source franchises. Yes, the app still lacks a lot of stuff from the games, but at this point, the attractiveness comes from all the dedication people are putting into it, rather than the app itself, which was only the fuse to this big bomb of mainstream.
I mean, the concept of Pokémon GO satisfies in a cheap yet effective way the dream of almost every pokémon fan: bring pokémon into the real world for you to capture them. If the developers of this app aren't stupid, then they're in for some of the biggest changes in video game history. For now, it's only a fad that may not fade too soon.
