It was an experiment and it was during a time when Nintendo tried to pander to weebs, they released Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors and Sm4sh (which had a shit ton of waifushit like Lucina and Palutena)
They realized that was destroying their family friendly image and during the development of games like Xenoblade and Fates and #FE they knew they messed up greenlighting those projects so they turned it all back to family friendly.
