how do i get better at this fucking game
when i try competitive i get completely wrecked
>>
There is not shortcut, you literally just have to play for thousands of hours, the skill ceiling in this game is incredible.
>>
Play all of the tutorials and trials. Play a lot in practice mode. Otherwise, watch others play and learn to do what they do. Also, try changing the controls if you are using default.
>>
>>344912023
>the skill ceiling in this game is incredible

i'm honestly surprised
i was expecting a casual fun time, but instead i got a fucking quake 3
hell, i think i was getting decent at q3 after 30 hours, meanwhile i'm absolute fucking shit at rl
>>
>>344912023
This. You must play more. Once you stop chasing the ball and start anticipating, you'll start having better games.
>>
Don't constantly chase the ball like a toddler. Rotate with your teammates on goal and shots.

>>
The only advanced game mechanic in this game is the aerial movement.
Everything else is what you would call a common sense: knowing how basic physics work, predicting what will your opponent do and being there one step ahead of him.
>>
Am I the only one who sits around the middle of the field while the ball is near the opponent's goal? I get a lot of good shots set up like that but see nobody else doing it.
I did this in real soccer too
>>
>>344913156

There are just so many different elements to learn. Aerials, wall shots, which part of the car to hit the ball with to create different amounts of power and elevation, learning how to dribble, learning how to block effectively, aerial dribbling, and being able to predict how the ball will come off of the walls. It comes from pure experience.

It's hard to advise when practice and learning is the best solution but some helpful tips

>Don't mindlessly chase the ball
>Regardless of team size you only need one player at any team attempting to hit the ball, any more than one is a detriment since you get in each others way
>Depth is very important, you always want to be a good distance behind the ball so that you can drive into it with power and get distance on it.
>In 2v2 you want one person chasing the ball and one person positioned with depth in a central position where they can both defend a strike and attack a pass.
>If the chasing player is on a wing, resist the temptation to position yourself slightly behind them on the same wing
>Practice aerials but know your limit. Only attempt an aerial at a height you have 90% confidence of making a connection at.
>Practice kickoffs in 1v1, if you ever notice the ball rebounding off a wall and into your own net from a kickoff understand that you've fucked up. It's entirely possible to perform a kick off in both an aggressive and defensive manner, it's worth learning both.
>communicate positively with your teammate, save the bitching until after the game
>>
>>344914009

It's not worth touching ranked until you're about 50 hours in, maybe 100. You'll generally get destroyed. Play until you can consistently pubstomp and then move to ranked.

Also,

Yes, I don't know how people stand normal mode with everyone leaving all the time.

The first 10 games might have rough spots while they determine your rank but after that you'll be placed in a rank with like skilled people. I would highly encourage not playing anything other than ranked at all times.

1v1's can be frustrating at first, but i truly believe it is the best way to get better at the game. It really helps you learn positioning and decision making, which is probably 75% of giting gud.

>tfw you first learn to aerial
>>
>>344914897

I'd say 2v2s are better for gitting gud. 1v1 promotes a sort of aggressive style of play that doesn't lend itself well to working with a teammate. However, only having one person to have your back / having their back is good for learning passes and assist goals.

Case in point, I kick ass at attacking and taking possession, but not so good at striking, so I tend to get the ball then run it along the wall / pass it to someone else to strike with.
>>
>>344914690

If you actually "did shit like this every match" you would understand how truly difficult it was. Oh and you'd be a pro player.
>>
>>344914897
It's useful but would agree with
>>344915101

You see a lot of players who have the ability to be good attempting to 1v2 and getting utterly destroyed. It's really important to realise and seemingly difficult for a lot of players to understand that it isn't useful at mid to high levels of ranked play to attempt to solo a team.

Something I'm noticing casually watching good players (read: better than me) with a semi-interested-but-not-very-motivated approach to git gudding at rocket league: they don't full throttle all the time.

so put that with the advice pile
>know when to go slower

I love this game, and I recognize my limits.
I know that hardly I'll ever be able to fly like a fucking rocket.
My only complain about this game is the explosion in 1v1 matches.
>>
>>344914401
I thought this aswell, but when I played the enemy team were rookies/experts the whole time, I like free wins but I thought it would be difficult.

They just reset everyone's MMR for the new season. Its a mixed bag right now but yeah mostly at first everyone will be terrible.
>>
>>344916657

See, my experience of comps were either getting with a decent team and having a hard go, or being matched with noobs and getting stomped. It's generally a lot harder than pubs.

You can play unranked if you just want to play around without any kind of pressure.
When I had a few drinks I like to play labs, hoops, chaos or hockey. They're all good in their own way.
>>
>>344912980
Personally RL is one of those games that no matter how much i try i can't git gud. I have 300 hours in this game and i'm still garbage. Of course i'm better than when i first started playing but i can't do none of this shit in this video. Fuck, i'm still struggling with aerials off the wall and shit.
>>
Have almost 300 hours in the game, been solo queuing in ranked but I barely seem to go anywhere past challenger 3 as it is usually a complete gamble with how retarded my teammate is.

If anyone is down for some 2s hmu steamcommunity .com/id/panic2

> Fuck, i'm still struggling with aerials off the wall and shit.
Hell, I've got more time than you and can't even do them off of the ground. Sure I'll hit the ball, but like a wet fucking blanket.

>>
>>344918381
>ball rolls from the corner and drops by the goal
>fly higher than the goalie and score
>long shot about to drop on the goalie
>give it a tap and make it fly over him
You'll notice how useful they are when you meet someone who's good at them. You really can't do shit against it without being good at them yourself.
>>
The problem with 3v3 in RL is that the other two players always just rush to the ball like maniacs.
I usually wait around the middle line if one of my teammates is trying to get the ball to the enemy's goal. Waiting to see if I can take the pass or have to block.

But there is always that retard that has to rush past me and fuck our formation over by not doing anything productive with that speed. And then, they are unable to get back to our goal in time.

It's amazing how shitty many people are at positional awareness.

Got 200h and am in the Challenger bracket.

Same, 3v3 I'm top in Prospect and 2v2 I'm Challenger 4.

I Bounce between 3v3 and 2v2 and there is such a difference in peoples ground games.
In a game of doubles I can set up shots and dribble no problem.
In Solo Standard if I try any ground-work either none of my TM's are ready for the center or they are both heading back to goal because they didn't realize I was pushing to the opponent's pocket for the set-up.

The only way to MVP or carry on Standard ranked in to have a good to excellent air game (which I do not, which is why I'm doomed to never enter Challenger for 3v3)

also learn to get a good angle when sliding the ball at the corners of the field to get some sweet slam dunks

2v2 hoops is my favorite mode too
>>
>>344919865

Hoops is ridiculously hard unless you've basically mastered aerials.

I'm ok at this game, better than most at ground shit, but I can't seem to get the hang of aerials, at all. Anyone have any tips? I can usually hit it in aerials, but I can't get anywhere near the amount of control you'd need for it to actually be useful.

Yeah I get bumped up occasionally and play against Challenger 4/5 and see what it's like. I don't think I'll ever be that good. I accept my limits.

Lately I've been playing with a friend that got me into rocket league but lost interest. He's still right at the start of prospect. Playing comp 2s with him is fun. I can see exactly how I used to be.

People missing the ball, no ability to predict bounces, no air, doing dumb stuff like chasing a ball your teammates on with no hope of getting to it before the other team, can't save shit.

It's fun to look back at others and see where I was before I decided to practice.

Like the others said the aerial training is genuinely useful. When you can get 50% on that you're doing okay. As well, just use free play training to practice over and over and over.

It really all comes down to practice. The only thing I can think of saying is remember if the ball is rising, aim above it. If the ball is falling, aim below it.

I thought about this a lot the other day. The game has a lot more in common with pool than soccer.

It's kinda a hybrid of both but the influence of pool are very significant.

Honestly just watch the videos and see if you'd like it. It's a very fun competitive game with a lot of depth thanks to the community. The game itself is very simple but there's always another weird trick to learn to be slightly better than your opponents.

Soccer is a pretty deep game in itself desu, it's just fronted by overpaid, underskilled players. The teams as we know them are brands, not groups of really skilled players.

Look at Iceland in the Euro cup recently, they're all part-timers, all of which have other jobs and do it for fun, and they got into the semis.

I'm at 43 hours, I get MVP a majority of the games I play (in unranked, at least). Biggest advice I can give

1) This game is kind of like chess in regards to positioning, you have to be a few steps of your opponent at all times. Say the ball's in neutral position on the ground somewhere. Are you going to get there first? If so, is anyone coming in that can obviously block you? How far are you from the goal and how easy would it be to try to shoot in vs. run it up the field or setting it up for a team mate. Can't make it first? Try to anticipate where they want to hit it and get in front of it first. Failing that, double back and be in a position to hit it back. This is the kind of shit you need to be thinking about all the time, it will just come naturally with play.

2) The name of the game is getting to the ball first. Even if you can't it hit very hard, if an enemy is barreling towards the ball, even a tap will normally be enough to fuck with the trajectory and turn what could be a goal into a bounce off the back wall back to the opposite side. This also means really getting in there and practicing the aerial shots. Being able to touch the ball at the apex of its jump while everyone else is putzing around on the ground waiting for it to drop means you get initiative on where the ball is going next.

3) Double jumping to maneuver is an invaluable skill, not only does it get you where you need to go extremely quickly and let you pull shit you would never be able to just driving around, it also saves a lot of boost which is useful for a lot of things, but most importantly getting the aerial shots. Boost management is a skill you have to get down.

A lot of this just comes with practice, practice, practice. Before I picked this game up, I wrote it off as a dumb game for normies, but there's a surprising amount of depth to it. Just stick to it and remember it's just a game.

Not pictured in this 4 minute montage;
24 solid continuous hours of missed shots, bad kickoffs, poor dribbles, weak aerials
40+ solid continuous hours of sitting waiting for *The perfect shot*
30+ own goals
Easily 800+ regular not flashy in the slightest goals.
And even after all this cool shit I doubt this guy even went up or down in rank.

Your numeric ranking still goes up in down, not necessarily your icon. For instance being a supernova division 1, you can have a different numeric rating then another supernova division 1. it's between a specific range but for the max rank it's technically infinite past a point.

>>
>>344920215
Slow down. I've seen countless people missing aerials because they had to much forward momentum and couldn't get high enough in time. Shortly hit backwards before jumping and learn how to double jump and boost at the same time to get faster in the air if needed. Don't hold boost all the time, instead tap it and only hold in situations where you either need to get really fast, higher up in the air or need to change direction drastically. Lots of people hold boost even at max speed (noticeable are purple lines behind back wheels and your camera zooms out a little depending on your settings) when they should just tap boodt to stay at that speed.

Camera settings are quite important as well. I woulnd't recommend standard settings as you have very little sight over the field both on ground and in the air and if the ball is infront of you it will block most of your view. Changing my camera settings has also notably increased my wall shot accuracy.

>The name of the game is to hit the ball first
The name of the game is to hit the ball last
If that means letting someone else take the shot on you be sure to get close to the ball to minimize the probability that you miss once they hit it

>The game is like chess
It's a little more like Tug-of-War but it's really important you know where to hang out when the ball is either going to them or to you
Know when and where to defend if you have to and when to push offense

For Doubles: In defense one person should always be positioned center of your goal (or even IN the goal if it's too close) while the other works on taking the ball out of their control. If they make a shot on goal and the goalie saves it the goalie becomes the latter and the other player becomes goalie (to keep the goal defended at all times.
In offense their is the set-up (done usually by whoever took the ball out of their control) and the striker who should hang-out around mid-field and needs to be ready to either act on the set-up or start a new set-up if the first fails. If the set-up fails then whoever set it up needs to get in position to either defend goal or become the striker, it depends on if the ball goes into the enemies control or not.

And this is just Doubles, and even then it still depends on your ability to hit the ball where you want to (and you want to CONTROL the ball, not hit it. That usually means hitting soft or stopping it to keep it in front of you as you push offense).

I call it the Confidence Effect

If you make a goal or do well you probably continue to do well or even get better, which I think is because you're confident in yourself.
If you fuck up you lose confidence and are more likely to lose focus and fuck up more.

It's fun to use the chat to try and fuck with the other teams confidence (by saying things like "Now lets get started" or "Nice Shot" when they fuck up or "What a Save" and "Thanks" whenever your team does well)

That's where people saying endless hours of practice comes in. Eventually you memorize all the bounces and know where you need to turn before the ball. When you DONT know where the ball will end up the game is really hard to predict.

Practice practice practice.

>>344928195
I've had this problem in the past and gotten really pissed at friends. It hasn't helped that I've repeatedly told this one guy "Don't challenge the ball when I'm on it, you won't score and they'll get a free shot when both of us are in some corner".

What it took was saying it over and over and eventually just not playing competitive with friends that refuse to play well. So I play casual with some people and I treat the game like it's a fun time waster and not a competition.

This one who always chases the ball no matter how bad of an idea it is gives me snark whenever I miss and minimizes their faults, then we'll play comp and I'll give 100% and he'll let in like 6 goals and still say it was bad luck. It's infuriating so the only option is to not care (and not play comp with him).
>>
>>344928305

you can always judge your team by whether they quick chat or not. compliment someone on a goal. if they say thanks, they're alright.

if they never communicate, fuck 'em. my favorite way to sabotage a team full of whiners is to sit on my back and spin in a circle.

It's because it's not flat, and it fucks with boost placement I think, or like boost spacing. Also the hills can fuck with car hitboxes going for certain shots. Hills can also fuck with your initial trajectory when you start to fly from a jump somewhat.

>>344932452
Because all the bounces are different and a lot of the game is about predicting bounces. This difference is not applied anywhere else and there's no special practice mode for that specific arena.
