Well, the next goal apparently is to make it into a fully fledged single player game and all the things that entails. He's at $42k USD, with the "game goal" being considered funded at $80k, so about $37k to go so he has the cash to dev it full time.

Next goal at $120k is to add online play and a whole slew of features and shit involving it, after that at $150k he turns it into a full on SDK for other game-devs to use. His last defined goal is at $250k, and that is to turn SpaceEngine into a full on MMORPG.

Personally, I think he'll make the $80k goal within a sane timeframe and turn it into a single player game and maybe start some work on multiplayer. I dont see him successfully turning it into an MMORPG though, that is simply too massive of a project for one man even if he was doing this full time.

In theory, yes, but I've never tried it on an intel IGP. KSP though is much more CPU and ram heavy. Its highly recommended that you have at least Sandy Bridge or better for the CPU, and at least 4GB of open ram (so 8GB system ram is recommended) during normal computer operations, because KSP will use up to about 4-4.1gb in 64-bit mode with a bunch of mods installed. Dont run 32-bit mode, you'll smash right into the 32-bit program memory limit within minutes of starting a game.

Ok, guess that answers that question. Still, my point stands: lots of ram recommended, as is a fast CPU especially if you're going for big ships/stations.

And the person in the first vid clearly doesnt know how to land on other bodies. Low and fast, null out lateral velocity, counter vertical velocity as it makes its presence known once the retrograde marker is on top of the blue hemisphere, fall and do a short suicide burn to set down.

Well, there are memory footprint reduction mods, and ships/stations can be made less laggy by focusing on trimming part counts as much as possible during construction, and editing the KSP ini file to allow for .1s physics step.

I think Unity 5 is better at the part count thing though, I have yet to check with a fuckhuge space station due to the fact I'm still launching hardware.

That it is, although some of the things done to ensure the final product is as efficient as possible in terms of part count can be rather wonky or unwieldy to fly to their destination at times.

Some of my heavier structures that i was minimizing part counts on required that they be surrounded and attached to what I call a lifting and maneuvering barge, where everything necessary to get it where it needed to go and then attached to the target ship was installed AROUND the payload.
I would then dock the payload to the desired target, release the payload from the barge, and fly the barge away, leaving 3 parts attached to the station instead of 20+.
Downside is that it requires a significantly larger rocket to get into space, and the payload inside the barge tends to wobble around like a giant floppy dildo the entire time I'm doing maneuvers.

I thought Elite: Dangerous actually had a pretty decent system for generating pretty realistic worlds, I was seriously considering buying it over the sale but everyone I knew advised against it.

I find the exploration more satisfying in Space Engine. More variety, freer movement and actual physics when you want it. I didn't buy Horizons because it only has moons without atmospheres. I'm not going to buy a game that may or may not be completed eventually one 50 dollar annual DLC at a time. I don't give a shit about whatever gimmicky little tweaks he's done to the online universe.

I use a joystick and adjust the control sensitivity. You have to be careful about the axes you assign for atmosphere vs regular controls. Setting it up seems needlessly complicated and unintuitive and It still controls like shit in some atmospheres at some speeds. That's why one of my biggest desires for this games is overhauled physics and controls.

You have to be really interested in space to enjoy Space Engine. The fun is in exploring and making up your own shit to do. I personally try to jump from star to star in a ship, exploring planets and trying to keep my ship around as long as possible. If I fuck up and plummet into a planet, I delete the ship. If the game fucks up and makes my space ship invisible, I count it as a failed FTL jump and delete the space ship. I've gone probably 6 stars before this inevitably happens, it's very awesome though.

In all honesty probably never, the only possible way is if the singularity/some other life extending ai fusion thing happens soon. There's almost 0 chance of any person leaving this solar system and reaching another alive without being mechanically modified due to radiation and various other effects. Not to mention if we do actually invent space bending/moving objects the people who sent you on the mission would probably be long dead once you returned I highly doubt the first metahumans would live longer than 300 or so years probably, hell everybody could be long dead for all you know it only takes one asteroid. or the singularity could happen after you leave and you're the last regular non-modified human for a long time

I tried googling, and I couldn't find it. I lost the .txt file when my SSD died last year...

But! At least I know that many of my screenshots are on the best of space engine galleries online somewhere!

Ah, but let's get to the point, how I do it. Well, it's actually simpler than it looks, I use a program called SRWE - Simple Runtime Window Editor, it's a little program that was made for Skyrim to take high res screenshots using a method called "Hotsampling".

Hotsampling is a term used to describe a game that can change it's internal renderer resolution on the fly by accessing it through the SRWE hack, there are many games that support it, and many that don't. Space Engine is one of the ones that support it, and have actually very good results (most games will crash immediately upon changing resolution).

So, to take these screenshots all you need is a very beefy computer, Space Engine 9.7.1 or higher, SRWE and a loooooot of patience.

With Space Engine the resolution limits are on your GPU, if you run out of VRAM you'll crash the game and most likely your system as well. If you don't, you probably will crash the game. If you don't, you can try to take a screenshot and hope it doesn't crash while you're taking the screenshot.

My "workflow" is as it follows:

>Fly around at 1080p normally
>Find object I want to take a screenshot of
>Position the camera accordingly
>Use SRWE to change to the desired resolution
>Wait for Space Engine to render the image (the game takes a bit to render the terrain, also at higher resolution higher accuracy of terrain generation so time increase is exponential)
>Take screenshot with F11 (I have it set to save a PNG, but you can set it to save JPGs, they are very high quality).
>use SRWE to go back to 1080p and continue moving around

You also have to remember too that when you hotsample, increasing the resolution of the window means you're expanding the borders, that means that on XY coordinate 0,0. (we assume 0,0 is the center of the screen even though it's not). If you expand the screen say 200 pixels it means you're expanding 100 to the left and 100 to the right. That means that when expanding the resolution you're expanding from the center, which means that your camera stays pointed at whatever you were pointing at.

You can use tricky camera positions and resolution expansion to get cool shots, you'll need experience for that but it's easy.

The game loves to crash when you try to increase your resolution, so if you find something cool and crash chances are it's going to be almost impossible to find it again, so what I do is after I find what I want and have my camera set up, I exit the game (this saves your location and camera position), so when I reopen the game and try to take the screenshot, if the game crashes I can just keep on trying until it works. Figuring this out took me many sad moments of crashes when I had found wonderful stuff that will never get to see the light on the internet.

I also use some .ini edits to increase the level of the terrain generator further, I like to call it LOD 2+ to be sophisticated, but really it's just some tweaks to the accuracy. I have my settings here: http://pastebin.com/8bqeJj4s

This is turning out to be longer than I thought, no wonder I wrote a pastebin, anyway.

You may also want to download the space engine texture packs and such for cool screenies of the universe.
Also, in the game's graphics options there's this thing called "Imposters" that you can tick on and off, you've probably tried messing with them and noticed that turning them off gives you like 30fps less in the viewer. That's because these imposters are actually fake textures used to represent celestial bodies, like the galaxies or nebulae. If you turn the imposters off the game renders them itself, and it has a high performance cost. For all intents and purposes you leave these on while moving around and when you want to take a screenshot turn the imposters off. You probably won't even notice a difference, but trust me when you take the screenshot it will matter in the final result.

Also you may want to learn the hotkeys for Exposure controls, Magnitude Order and Exposure mode.
Exposure Mode lets you select between Auto Exposure and Manual Exposure. Auto is good for making planets stand out alone (no stars in the background) and to take deep space screenshots that look semi-realistic. Manual exposure yields more hubble-like deep space shots with thousands upon thousands of stars on screen.

With manual exposure on you can then use Magnitude order controls to increase the magnitude to see more stars and see dimmer stars more brightly, and then use manual exposure to control how bright the stars are. Exposure also controls how bright/shiny planets are. Basically it comes down to toying with the exposure to get the good looking shot or the shot you want to take.

This image for example is using manual exposure with very high magnitude order and high exposure.

Did I mention that higher magnitude also increase the chances to crash? Yeah, the game loves to crash if your magnitude is too high, so don't just hold the button down for three seconds or you'll most likely crash. It's really finicky.

Also learn to toy with the settings the game has like bloom, etc. It's sliders so you can easily mess around and see the results, just do it while in 1080p.

Also my recommendation when taking high res screenshots is to turn OFF the anti aliasing.
If you take a 10k shot you don't want the FXAA to blur your super crisp stars, just leave the AA off and then if you want to get rid of jaggies downscale the image in Photoshop or something. The final result will be much better than leaving AA on in-game.
