I understand the hardware specs for the actual headsets are the same (or almost the same), but what selling points does the rift even have aside from their bought exclusives?

As of now, the main differences i see are that the rift was intended for sitting down and just looking at the pretty VR, while the vive is intended for players to actually GET IMMERSED INTO VR.

I honestly don't understand why someone would choose to pay hundreds for virtual reality, and then choose for that reality to be you sitting on your ass playing a controller you can't even see.

i get that it's meant for retards who will get it shoved down their throat by facebook, but what are they going to do when someone tells them that the vive lets you do?
>>
>>344866336
When the touch comes out they'll have basically the same functionality. Without Touch Oculus was cheaper than Vive.
>>
People should research such a large purchase.
Ive tried the vive. Itd be neat to own, but i dont know if ill like doing it for hours.
>>
>>344866747
>When the touch comes out they'll have basically the same functionality
No they won't, you are confined to a single area. This was revealed almost as soon as they started showing off their flimsy looking 150$ controllers.
>>
>>344866925
As in, you can't walk around? The Vive can't either. Well, it CAN but no one ever uses it and it makes me wonder why you even bother having that functionality sometimes.
>>
Nothing, the oculus is dead
>>
Nobody give a shit about VR!!

It's already dead? No one is talking about it anymore.

I'm laughing my ass off at anybody, especially the CEOs of big companies who have spent a lot of money into it, who thought this would catch on like fire. LOLOLOL
>>
>>344867153
>As in, you can't walk around?
Yes, you will never be able to walk around in oculus games and a lot of them will restrict your view.

>The Vive can't either. Well, it CAN but no one ever uses it and it makes me wonder why you even bother having that functionality sometimes

because it's one of the most innovative and immersive experiences you can have?

Room scale is absolutely amazing, even with smaller spaces because you get the choice to move your own body around in the game if you want to. If you every get your hands on a vive and manage to get ahold of a 15m x 15m space, you will probably never want to stop.

I wanted to see what it was like so i rented a dinky skating rink in my town for a party with my friends, they only had about 14m x 13m of space, but it was close enough.

It's hard to explain how it feels, but it is completely different from the teleport + interact gameplay you see with the rift and some vive videos at a sensory standpoint. The one thing that killed my immersion was gone, and it made me seriously consider spending 2000$ building a pole barn in my back yard for a VR space.
>>
>>344867496
>poor third worlder talking shit

Don't worry, in 2055 when you can afford any VR, you'll know what you missed.
>>
>>344866336
>playing a controller you can't even see.
Holy fuck you are retarded. Have you tried some modern VR?, you surely sound like you don't know what you are talking about
>>
>>344867789
i don't get what part of that is untrue?

You can't see your xbox controller on the rift, the vive is the only one of the two that has controller tracking.
>>
>>344867532
I thought no one was using room scale fully because when you walk around it makes you sick or something, so the Vive is now filled with "teleport to move" games? Or that's what I heard anyway. I haven't seen a video where you actually move around. Duck or lean to the sides, yes. Walk around? No.
>>
>>344868037
>I thought no one was using room scale fully because when you walk around it makes you sick or something
It's actually the opposite.

When you move in the vive, your "body" moves in perfect sync with you, there are no limits to where it can be tracked within the covered area.

With the rift, you have no motion controls, movement of the head is very limited.

>so the Vive is now filled with "teleport to move" games?

That's both systems because people are still afraid of tackling the movement systems. The rift is actually more prone to motion sickness, which is why so many of them are floating-camera third person games, the only type of game that doesn't really cause motion sickness because you are forced to move at a certain pace, your character's speed.

>Walk around? No.

Because there aren't many games where doing so is required, if you look for "budget cuts" videos, you will find people using large room-scale setups.
>>
>>344868037
>I haven't seen a video where you actually move around
because you haven't been looking very hard.

here's one guy using his tiny room with room-scale and it's fucking amazing.

>>
by all reports the vive is outselling the rift by as much as 2:1
>>
>>344868037
It's because the game worlds are much bigger than most people's play area. If the area in game small enough for you to walk in IRl then it's fine.
>>344867532
>Yes, you will never be able to walk around in oculus games and a lot of them will restrict your view.
You have no idea what you are talking about.

You literally cannot look directly behind you in some of them, it's definitely a real thing.

I seriously don't understand the mindset of someone who owns an Oculus or a Vive.

Even in the best case scenario where this technology becomes good and gets good software for it, it will be at least a few years from now and probably with different hardware you'll have to purchase.

And the more people dip their toes into the VR water, the clearer it becomes this will never be able to replace non-VR video games. At best it will become its own separate platform.
>>
The only interest I have in VR is simracing, which my DK2 is still doing great with. I'll upgrade in a few years when 100% screen door-less 4k displays are around for $300 or less.

There's sensors in the back.
And i've looked behind me when watching 360 porn on my one.
>>
>>344870070
I said some of them, and it's going to be more of an issue with the touch controllers because they will be extremely hard to track through your body, which is why touch demos are almost all limited to one direction at tech places.

It's not the worst thing ever, but it's a shit restriction that the vive just doesn't have.
>>
>>344870275
I actually think teh cables are a bigger poroblem for 360 than tracking since the touch is supposed to come with a second camera.
>>
>>344869743
>I seriously don't understand the mindset of someone who owns an Oculus or a Vive.

I tried VR at my friend's house and decided it was worth 815$

>Even in the best case scenario where this technology becomes good and gets good software for it, it will be at least a few years from now and probably with different hardware you'll have to purchase

Holy shit you mean to tell me i'll have to UPGRADE for a BETTER EXPERIENCE?!?!

Shocking news, dumbfuck.

>And the more people dip their toes into the VR water, the clearer it becomes this will never be able to replace non-VR video games. At best it will become its own separate platform.

No shit it's going to be a different platform, are you actually literally retarded?
>>
>>344870430
>the touch is supposed to come with a second camera

You buy it separately and since it doesn't directly link with the other one you will get desync when you turn around, that's the main reason vive base stations are physically connected by a wire.
>>
>>344870430
I have wondered about that. I've seen people in videos spinning around and getting tangled in cables and shit. Since you can see them and you're immersed in the game, that could end up being a real safety hazard. Don't want people falling over and slamming their head against the desk or something, right?
>>
>>344870584
I don't know about the rift, but the vive cables are pretty easy to feel on and around your legs. I've never tripped over my cable and i get really physical with some games.

At first i was consciously moving in ways that wouldn't tangle the cord, but after 2-3 uses i just started naturally moving in a way that wouldn't tangle shit.
>>
>>344870701
the vive cable is also much longer than the rift one
>>
I dunno about Oculus, but I tried out Vive on some event and it was really cool.
>>
>>344872464
i mean, that's just common sense considering the vive is true VR and the oculus is virtualboy 2.0
>>
>>344872573
Do you think it would have been as fun without roomscale?

If you had to stand still or sit down to play, would it have been as fun?
>>
>>344872872
The controllers and walking are half of the fun, if I'd be going VR - only Vive.
>>
>>344873021
Does it feel like a screen is actually taped to your face?

For me it was like a window at first, then slowly i stopped seeing the seams, took about 10~ minutes i would say.
>>
>to actually GET IMMERSED INTO VR.

you mean stupid little mini games?
>>
>>344874106
It seemed very natural after 20-30 seconds, I did see borders of the headset but you automatically ignore them and focus on screens, it felt so natural that i forgot about standing in the middle of a room while 20 other people are watching me. Really impressive stuff imo.
>>
>>344874357
Name the first console games dumbshit.
>>
>>344874728
>i forgot about standing in the middle of a room while 20 other people are watching me
i saw some footage of me playing and i looked like a total fucking idiot, but nobody cared because it's so much fucking fun.
>>

>i'm too poor to afford a VR headset
>i'm also too stupid to understand the vive is a HTC product and valve produces software for it
>i also can't get the taste of mark zuckerburgs cock out of my throat

Rift is better for sims, Vive is better for everything else.

Touch will not do roomscale as well as Vive does, simply because of the way the cameras work.
>>
>>344875829
>Rift is better for sims
How?

I don't really understand how the rift beats the vive in simulations, considering you can literally use the vive in the same way as a rift just my hooking up a controller.
