Getting the discount was only for Japan, was never available in NA.
PSP GO also used NEW proprietary memory cards, because somehow the regular PSP ones were no longer good enough.
All games were digital only, and were pricey, more then retail. $20-40. Also memory card size were somewhat small, limiting the amount of stuff you could have.
Also many titles were not available digital. Infamous ones like Kingdom Hearts, or Star Ocean drove people insane.
Still all that shit aside, it's dope as hell for custom firmware. I love it now, but hated it when I bought it at launch.

it's uninteresting in the most bland way. its not that it is a BAD game, it is an utterly AVERAGE jrpg. expect a cliched plot full of cliched, worn out characters as they embark on a cliche quest with no real identity of itself. while the combat system is not as dull as other jrpgs, it's going to wear thin as you slog through countless grind, because yes, this is one of THOSE games, where there is more grind than gameplay.
youre right about combat though. it is pretty fun. if you go into it expecting an awful story with awful characters and pointless grind, but fun gameplay, then maybe you'll be in for a treat.

The usual thing is starting with FE7 for GBA, the first one to be localized (simply translated as Fire Emblem). Then you can play Sacred Stones, also on the GBA, and then Path of Radiance for Gamecube. After those you can either play the sequel, Dawn of Radiance, for the Wii, the 3DS games or go back to older titles such as the first one (remade as Shadow Dragon for the DS), the sixth one (sequel to 7) or the fourth one (which is pretty fucking good).
Alternatively, you could start with Awakening knowing that it is more casualized and waifu-oriented than the rest of the games in the series and then go back to the GBA games.

Start with the GBA games in any order. The DS games are also a decent place to start since they're a bit more simple (they must be played in order), however they aren't as good. You can also play Conquest on the 3ds since the gameplay is great despite the awful writing. Then play Path of Radiance -> Radiant Dawn (GC and wii), then FE4 -> FE5 on the snes. The order isn't a big deal except for a couple games you need to play in order. Just avoid Awakening on the 3ds because it's one of the worst games ever made.
